General loudness

You all might be surprised how many places have fairly stiff noise abatement, and what they are. Personally I think they are a good thing. SPL is dangerous and has to be regulated like anything else that is dangerous. YMMV. FYI, once you lose your hearing, your done. Yeah you might like it loud, now, but at some point you might grow up and want to be able to hear. It very well should be considered assault, to the audience.
But I make my living in the sound business, so maybe I am a little more careful about it.

hahahaha

i'll agree that loud music is amazing, but you need protection. i saw the Japanese band BORIS in Toronto a year ago, they were soooooooooooo loud. great show though.

again, it depends on the band. i wouldn't want to go see Andrew WK or Lightning Bolt playing quiet like an acoustic jazz trio, nor would I want to see a jazz band playing ridiculously loud.

whether you want to admit it or not, tube amps are a large part of rock and roll music, and most tube amps need to be LOUD to sound good. so... rock bands are loud, and i wouldn't want it any other way.

is this argument really even worthwhile? seems like i see a thread like this pop up every so often and the same things are said each time.

Yep. There's a few of us on here that use high volumes as a way of creating something way more visceral than the majority of bands. Then there's a lot of people on here that can't think outside of THEIR prefered genre(s), and can't realize that maybe high volumes ARE acceptable elsewhere in the music world, and there are crowds that want it, and venues that are more than happy to have it. I'd never suggest someone in a jazz trio play through a wall of amps and cabs, and I'd never suggest someone in a doom band play through a 2x10 combo amp. Some on here don't think genre matters and then that's a whole other debate. The volume issue seems to be a touchy subject on both sides of the argument.

No. Absolutely not. I understand completely the dangers of high volumes but suggesting there be stricter regulations and all that is absurd. The crowds are willing participants and if a band they are going to see is all about super high volumes, then they should already know that they may leave with decreased hearing if they don't wear earplugs. Simple as that.
