Generic P-Bass

I love fender P basses, and intend on getting one of the new american standards. MY problem is, though I love the look, I find they all tend to be the generic bass. Any ideas on how to make the bass a little flashier? (Note: I think Steve Harris's bass looks amazing. Unfortunately the signature is not what I'm looking for in a bass.)

You can do all sorts of things to personalize a standard P.
Swap out the pickguard to another color.
Change the hardware to black, gold or whatever you like. Get flashy knobs.
I wouldnt recommend altering the bass in any way so as to damage it's resale value like painting it or carving into it or stickers & the like.
always be able to return it to it's original state.
keep the original hardware, pickguard ect so you can put 'em back on later
