Double Bass Genz, EA, Acoustic Image and ???

I've been very happy with my Aguilar Tonehammer 500. Have been able to dial a sound to suit all the styles I play, and plenty of power! Not cheap (I think $700), but the 350 is less expensive.

Yes, as a 3.0 Shuttle and HPF owner/user I agree. The Fdeck HPF is a quick fix for a boomy room and so much more.

I agree the HPF cuts out excessive "boom" but I also found that I had to eq my GB Shuttle 3.0 more to get the sound I liked. I tried going straight into the amp and actually preferred the sound better. I think my bass Thompson Hybrid and Rev Solo ii tends to mid rangy going straight into he amp warmed up the tone

My GKMB112 never sounds good with my upright. My Walter Woods sounded good with any cab. I have the Genz Benz Shuttlemax 9.2 and I've been told that the EA 210 series and Whizzy cabs sound amazing with upright.

I can definitely believe that your Woods sounded good with any cabinet, because mine does. The Pre Amp voicing is the thing after all, no comparison between it and a MB112 from Gallien Krueger. The closest GK ever got to a Woods, was the older 200MB's, and RCB's IME, IMHO they sounded pretty good. I have 4 EA Cabinets from the older VL series, a VL 208, VL 110, and VL 108 that I use several times a week. Great sounding cabinets with upright. I'm fond of the Genz Benz amps as well.

If you haven't tried an Acoustic Image, you should. I'd recommend a combo with a down firing speaker...sounds amazing for upright. Plus you can slide out the amp and use it solo with your wizzy, or use the wizzy as an extension cab.

Dave - well timed comment. I actually just picked up an AI Clarus to run my Wizzy 10 with. Absolutely amazing sound. I'm a little worried about it for louder gigs, but might try it with a 1x12. My buddy has the Wizzy 12 or maybe my GB NEOX 112.

Genz Benz Engineer "Aged Horse" here on Talkbass unequivocally states that, with a Genz Benz Amp, you shouldn't need a device like the HPF Buffer Pre Amp. He recommends that you "try it out" sans buffer pre, before you buy one. Personally, I have found that amps, other than my Walter Woods MI-400-8 or Woods Electroacoustic Ultra, benefit from the HPF. I have played through Shuttle 3.0's and 6.0's at Webster University, and I always preferred the sound that came from the HPF vs going straight into the amp. With the HPF you have the additional use of a phase switch, high pass filter, and volume control. I have all three versions of FDecks little gems.

Love the Genz stuff...I own two ShuttleMax amps...GREAT for doubling...my bass and pickup still sound better with a pre...wish it weren't true
