Genzler or Dark Glass?

Sure, so Darkglass went the way of Aguilar. KORG owns both now. As an Aguilar user, I miss being able to pick up the phone when I had questions.

My mind unconsciously associates Genzler with the Bass Whisperer tone because he demo'ed too many Genz Benz but that's really not the case anymore because we have Nate Navarro. So unconsciously I always associate Genzler with fusion, roots and jazz and the Golihur relatiosnhip does not help and Dark Glass with (Scandi ) Metal and harder genes.

That's really not the case ever. You can use both products for all genres. I thought Mr. Castro is easily accessible via social media.

Genzler all the way. I do really enjoy a few DG products (Alpha Omega Ultra is my fav) I prefer the voicing of Genzler cabs to Darkglass. They do sound very different depending on what you play but for my uses ( County, classic rock, nu-metal) The Genzler cabs are my ideal sound.

My father has the exact same Genzler rig. We demoed it in store (Bass Direct, Warwick England) against everything else they had (a LOT of high end gear). It was the winner (tone, shape and size, and visuals). The amp has a fan, which is silent (thermostat controlled I think - so at home practice volume it doesn’t even come on). It’s really nicely built.

IMO if you have the money for something as nice as Genzler, that's what I'd do.

I have tried the Darkglass and it seemed very focused on the lows and the amp had some nice tonal options, but I couldn't focus the bottom end the way I wanted to so it went back. If these were your only two choices would suggest the Genzler for the versatility alone. All the genzler cabs I ever played were very punchy and accepted EQ well and the Magellan amps are wonderful. Best to try out both to get your own ears opinion of any combo. Lots of folks like the Markbass combos as well. Let us know what you decide.

I found the Darkglass amps to be unusually dark sounding with all EQ at noon. Not very modern sounding at all. I do occasionally use a DG900 if I need the wattage, but for most other stuff I prefer EBS, those things are so much more clear and defined sounding.

The Genzler tone stack is very versatile and easy to use. A wide range of tones are possible.

I’m all for the DG, the trick is to use the B3k and VMT circuits as always on parts of the preamp, depending on what sound you’re after. I leave my VMT circuit engaged with the blend relatively low and it’s an awesome sounding set up, I have the MT900 V2 with a DG112 and 212. Playing the 112 by itself sounds great and is pretty similar to the combo you’re looking at the heads just got a few more bells and whistles and can go down to 2 ohms.

I run a Genzler Magellan 800 head into a DG 212 cabinet and it’s wonderful. You won’t be sad if you go with either in my estimation.

This is second-hand info, so take it for what that's worth, but i was chatting with a friend who works at a local shop who carries Darkglass among other brands, and he said they've been having a lot of trouble getting the company to fix a problem with a customer's amp under warranty. His take was "they sound amazing, great amps as long as nothing breaks". From a purely customer service and durability point of view, i'd probably lean toward Genzler, between these options.

From my experience the Genzler gear is - and always has been - very versatile and geared towards very workable real-world tones. Darkglass stuff is fine, but I’ve found a bit of baked-in eq and tone on the combos. Not a bad thing - but try before you buy.

I'm a big fan of Genzler. I haven't used DG, but it seems to go for a fairly specific sound rather than being highly versatile, sort of like how I view Ampeg. I don't know how helpful that is.
