Who do you listen to now? Any genre? Find one that you like. Then research who influenced them and who they influenced. Keep spreading out that way. It's really interesting to learn the history.

Get some Willie Dixon, either as a leader or backing up the Chess Records artists like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf.

Very good advice. I've been listening to the "Years Gone By" CD lately. "Cockroach" has been one of my favorite blues bass parts since I first heard it.

Johnny Winter - checkout the bass when it kicks in at 6:30 it shows how the bass rocks the blues and how it can transform it.

The bass line on "Breaking Up Somebody's Home" is another great one.

Anything Larry Taylor is usually good bass i.e. - Canned Heat, especially John Mayall.

"The Evil One" with Tinsley Ellis is some good bass, especailly the album "Georgia Blue", and "Highwayman: Live".

Gerry McAvoy with Rory Gallagher is some sweet P-Bass action. Go get "Live in Euope" - it's in my all time best albums for sure.

On the funkier side:

Ronnie Baker Brooks Jr. - Lots of bluesy funk on a Lakland.

James Cotton - Can you say Chicago soul?

Man, You've got a lot of blues to choose from..it's really about finding the stuff that speaks to you. I love the old stuff check out some pre-60's- Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson II (Rice Miller),T-Bone Walker There's a lot of later stuff that's solid too. BB King Live at the Regal, WOW! Freddie King- good compilation called King of the Blues, Albert King Born Under A Bad Sign- This album is Disreali Gears without a wahwah pedal. Another vote for Albert Collins Frozen Alive. John Lee Hooker Complete VeeJay recordings. Stevie Ray Vaughn Texas Flood is a great record. Good Luck with your hunt, if you find something that turns your crank, find more like it.
