I don't really see these two cabs as totally competitive. The SVT cab will not fit in the trunk of my Honda Accord. The NV doesn't say Ampeg and does not look the same on the backline. They both sound fantastic. I could be happy with either.

For my gigs, the NV is more practical.

Having owned both, although not at the same time, I suspect that the Berg might fart out a little before the Ampeg. I have noticed a couple of times with my Berg 610 when running the VR into it that if I really push it the speakers seem to protest a little. Now I am talking real loud here, and other cabs would object also but my memory tells me that my old 810 handled being pushed hard a little easier. That said, given the choice I woild take the Berg over the Ampeg - and I would take the Berg NV215 over the NV610 any day too!

The NV610 is a great, great, 610 cab.
But, the NV215 is the best cab Jim ever made.JMO

i don't see what's so bad about using a synth with a sealed cab. i've done it and never blew anything. sounded good to me.

Its not about blowing drivers or anything. Primarily frequency response. The sealed tweeterless bass cabs are great for electric bass but the extreme frequencies most synths are capable of get rolled off. Like greenboy said it depends on what is expected. Personally i think a ported cab with a tweeter would be best for both.

i guess if your idea of synth is a triton or something else digital along those lines, you'd want full range. but my idea of a synth is a mini-moog or other analog synth, so i'd dig a 5k cutoff, especially if i were playing bass synth.

All analog old school minimoog and moogerfoogers. Perhaps Im overtstating my point. The NV610 sounds great in nearly all circumstances and could work very well.

I have a mini because I love big fat sub bass which its famous for. Its also famous for ripping leads. The extremes - the rich sub lows and shimmering highs are simply lost with a cab like the 810 or NV610. Octavers and effects like resonant low pass filters, ring mods etc lose something with cabs like that. I usually use my synth through a pretty high powered full range PA so it's easy to see what is missing when I practice at home through my SVT/NV610. It depends on what kind of balance you want with your rigs response.
