Getting decent sound in a big space

Not sure what happened but something clicked this week and we managed to have a really decent practice. Things got a little loud at moments but never out of control. The only physical change we made was to mount the monitors high on tables facing the band. With that success I ordered a couple of speaker stands and longer cables so we can make this a permanent adjustment.

I think it was a combination of recognition and the excellent attitude of the drummer to tone it down on the softer songs. Everyone left feeling much better about the possibilities going forward.

Appreciate all the feedback to get this point.

One thing we used to do (in a 9 piece horn band) is practice dynamics(getting louder and softer). Take a song (any song) and have one of the band members direct the band to decrease/increase volume as you go through the song.

One you hear the difference in volume and get your ears tuned to it, it's a lot easier to control on stage.

Don't remember is you have a vocalist but he/she can direct band during gigs.

Yes we do and he's pretty good, I try to keep him as free of leadership roles because he leads a worship band and uses this band as a break from that duty. He has his hands full helping with the arrangements and learning the songs.

Once everyone gets the first set it will be fun to move on to new stuff, but to get this going we had to have a set that was easy and I could help everyone learn their parts. It's just fun to be making headway...
