Getting just a bit ridiculous

Good grief......
I had the misfortune of walking into the end of a guitar hero contest at a local brewpub recently. The last 2 guys are dueling to the death for $50. After the winner is decided (he was pretty good at the game, I guess) he makes his way back to the bar. Three smoking hot girls are on him immediately. The effect was identical to the way the chicks are on the lead singer/lead guitarist at your local gig. IDENTICAL.......
It didn't occur to me until just now that the girls may have thought they were actually playing the songs. They didn't look very bright...

So your pushing 5 buttons and hitting a plastic switch thing with your thumb to follow along with the stuff that comes up on screen?

I find that playing the real thing is a hell of a lot more entertaining.

I find that playing the real thing is a hell of a lot more entertaining.
i can understand the fun - it's a relatively simple vehicle to getting the chance to perform a reasonable approximation of playing along with other musicians. instead of taking months to get to the stage to be competent, now you can "play along" after a few hours.
it's no different, really, than playing a role playing game where you "discover" secret formula or perform heroic feats of daring-do.
i'm sure on "talkmerc.com" they've had a running discussion about how pathetic and ridiculous first person shooters have been since doom came out

geez.......now you can be 12 well into your twenties.....the crux of it all seems to be that it has become so easy to simulate being a geetar guy that fewer will be able to appreciate the real thing,or have any idea of all the work that goes into performingi can understand the fun - it's a relatively simple vehicle to getting the chance to perform a reasonable approximation of playing along with other musicians. instead of taking months to get to the stage to be competent, now you can "play along" after a few hours.

2 days ago they aired that South Park episode (over here) about Guitar Hero.
The Heroine Hero spoof was funny. Not haha-funny but still.
Well, to me it's a bit different.
I'm not a gamer anymore, but I liked to play Gran Turismo. Not much chance to do that in real life, unless you are filthy rich.
With Guitar Hero IMO you could pick up a real instrument and have somthing to show for in a few weeks or months.
My GF wants a Nintendo Wii for those sportgames.
I said she could go out and learn real tennis... or whatever else.
Although I must say, those Singstar games were nice. Really good to train your vocals.

Or, most persons just resigned to the fact that they suck at the real thing, but like the "thrill", and the rest just like it because it's a social game... I mean, music is a universal language, why can't everyone enjoy it in whatever means possible?
Adding to what Turner said, it's not like WoW guys are putting real Wizards out of jobs....that sai, virtual amps, and virtual pedals, and real guitars made into GH controllers I DO think are lame-O.

i don't know, i've heard that a lot of the music that's getting into guitar hero has been selling again, after having been pretty much outta circulation for a while.
i actually know a few kids that live in my neighborhood who got real guitars because of guitar hero. they are taking it pretty seriously too. -shrug-
i suppose i like the notion that real things that require a little effort are usually better and better for us......it's pretty hard to argue that video games by themselves are bad,but i think they are building blocks of the general decline of the "do for yourself" ethic that brought us the joys of technology in the first place..

I don't like Guitar Hero, but I can at least understand it, i.e. it takes time to learn to play songs on Guitar, whereas with the game, you only have to press some buttons.
But DJ Hero? Because it's just that difficult to play records, and sometimes scratch them on rhythm?
I've seen a few DJs that actually had talent. Most, however, could be entirely replaced with an iPod.

they had a single guitar stand at a local Game Stop once, and a sign like that that said "free air guitars, take one" and my boyfriend, who plays bass and guitar, lololol fell for it!
I mean he was like "darn, they were giving a free guitar away!"

I would agree with you on the 'DJ being easily replaced by an iPod' argument, except have you ever seen a DJ that can actually spin & scratch in rhythm, as well as properly mix beats, allowing one song to flow almost unnoticely into another? Thats something that, as far as I'm concerned, can't be done on an iPod.
I mean, sure, Ive seen DJs just start one record and switch it up to another, but there definitely is some skill and artform to good mixing.
And I dont see DJ Hero being any more or less lame than Guitar Hero could be.
