getting my optimal setup..

so, as i recently used, i cannot use my 2 8x10s in parallel because it would equal 2.67 ohms, and my amp has a 4 ohm minimum. I'm going to eventually buy a new amp that is 2 ohm capable, but in the mean time i want to get the most out of my 2 8x10s.

i am currently only using 1 of them, and the other one is sitting there looking pretty and fridge-like. i want to make both of them talking fridges.

i have a:

ampeg svt 810, 1x4 ohms or 2x8 ohms
crate bx 810, 1x8 ohms

as i've been told (please correct me if i'm wrong), if i wire the 2 halves of the ampeg in series, i would have a total of 5.33 ohms. I also found out that all of the inputs of the ampeg 8x10 are ins and outs. so...

(as a note, I'm referencing the input jacks as they are numbered n the product manual, from here:

i wire from one amp output to the ampeg input jacks 2/3, then out of another 2/3 into 1. then from the other amp output to the crate imput.


would this effectively put the ampeg in a series 2x8 ohms, with the crate in parallel, giving me 5.33 total ohms?

yes, i know that 2 8x10s are unnecessary. i know it's pointless. i want to do it anyway.

i hope somebody can tell me that I'm correct, but if not i'll just wait until i get my next amp.

You need a specially built cable to wire in series.

And............even then, wiring your 2 halves of the Ampeg together will give you a 16 ohm load

If you then add the Crate, yes, you will be presenting a 5.33 ohm load to your amp.

Why would you want to give a Crate cabinet twice the power of an Ampeg though ??????

i don't know how / why i would want to send a crate twice the power of an ampeg...to be honest, this is all very confusing. up until now i've always been plug and play.

I highly suggest you use just one 810. They are two different brands and both of them sound very different. Combining them is not going to sound very good at all. I highly suggest you use the Ampeg 810e in the 4 ohm mode with your head. Plug & play at it finest. Using two 810's onstage is nuts to be honest. Two Ampeg 810's without a PA is no big deal, but one 810 should be just fine in any situation.

i think you'll be getting the most out of the crate by slapping an ampeg grill on it, leaving it unplugged, and pretending it's another ampeg cab

actually i'm kidding. you could try buying another amp to run it separately if you want to use it. maybe see if you could get a deal on a cheap tube head and run it as a dirty rig. running a separate head would be much preferable to running both with the same head imho.

+1 for what JimmyM said.. Run a true stereo rig by signal splitting via aby or any stompbox with 2 outputs. most mxr and boss have these as do others.. just a touch of reserch is all man. with cleans into the ampeg and dirtys/efx into the crate.. This is currently how I am pursuing except I am running 2 ampeg svt15en and a hartkeha3500 and want to get a 6x10 with a hartke ha5500 and run my board to the 5500/6x10. There would be another solution: Get a cheap poweramp and run it slaved to power up the second cab.

This means: Use your amp with the Ampeg cab, get out your "slave-out" of your amp into the input of a poweramp and run your Crate-cab with that poweramp. If the Crate-cab is louder then the Ampeg-cab, you can dial that in with the volume-knop of the poweramp.

I don't know, what amp you use, so I don't know if it has a slave - out. Take a look at the manual to get sure.
