Getting new setup -- Have 1-15'' cab to work with

I've been running a Crate BT1000 amp for the last few years but I recently found a band to play with and we are doing quite well. So now it's time to upgrade to a bigger setup that can handle gigs we get. It's a lighter rock/jazz kind of band so we aren't playing loud, high volume music.

I have 1-15'' cabinet to work with that my buddy owns. Not sure of the ohms on it.

One option is my Crate has an external speaker output so I could run the 15'' cab through that. Not sure that's a wise move though?

Other option is to get a amp head obviously. A friend recommend the Genz Benz shuttle series. They seem to get good reviews. Thoughts?

Well, try the 15 with your combo amp, see what happens. If it's good, you're done. If it's not good, there are gazillions of amp choices available. I'd go out and play a bunch of different amps to get a feel for what you've been missing, (tone). Have fun in the process.
