getting ready to pull the trigger on a cheap maybe short scale bass...opinions please

But you insist on new for a shortscale bass get a Squier Bronco and mod the heck out of it . Seen some killer modded ones done cheap that sounded and played better than my Stang RI IMHO. If that is not up your alley go with a good used one .

My Bronco Bass definitely sounds better than my stock Mustang Bass.

It was $100 used and it probably has about $60 worth of mods. I will probably upgrade the tuners to Schaller M4s for $80 or so and it will stack up to any bass in the world IMO.

The Mustang was $550 used (plan on modding it too). You do the math.

I love these basses because the neck has the width of a guitar neck. It's nice like that.

I own the Gretsch and have played the Cort Action Jr.

Both good basses. The Gretsch is a beast when strung with flatwounds.

+1 on the little Bronco Squier. I picked up mine for $50 used and plan on some mods too. The stock pup is really poor but that neck...man it's nice!

I couldn't stand to read the OP, but if you want a short scale, go for the Gretsch 2202 Electromatic Jr. Jet. Great bass, great price.

I loved my Jay Turser Beatle Bass but I just bought two Jaguar Basses making my total Bass count 6 so I juat sold the JT on Ebay. Perfect Cond. w/ HSC and I only got $193 for it. I tried to cancel the auction but it was sooner than 24 hours

No one mention the vintage Vox Hawk IV. Tiny neck all the way. Basucallt a guitar suze all around. Bought one on Ebay 7 years ago for about $200 and sold it for $600

Hey Sins, sweet job on the insane pick guard modification. I've thought many times about picking up that Gretsch. It looks like a great tool for the money.

If you (or anyone reading this) ever look for another shorty some time down the road, I've also been curious about the Hofner Galaxy. It is a short solid body with what looks like a very straight neck - almost like a broom handle. Pricing is reasonably in your price range if I remember correctly.

Hey, we are all pals here even when differing in opinions!

But all the dots (you are only supposed to use three... to act here as a grammar Nazi) makes the post VERY hard to read! The three dots are known as an "ellipsis" and symbolizes a missing word or phrase, a pause in SPEECH, or a trailing off of the thought. It's much better to use a comma to do your pauses in a written post. There is nothing wrong with your speech-like style however, it's just a matter of us trying to read it! It's not a "big deal"... you didn't break any rules... but if you want advice, it might be best to make it as easy as you can for knowledgeable people to help you.
