Getting that "thunk" not funk.

Trying to get something like this in the studio right now....

Obviously it's sidechained like all get out, but the engineer and I just can't seem to get that 'Thunky' sound out of the bass.

Gear I got in here right now:

Fender Highway 1 Pbass. Strings - XL Blue Steels.
Lakland Darryl Jones 5 - Strings - Dr Fat Beems
EB Sterling - Strings - who the hell knows...
Eden Roadrunner WT600
BagEnd Q10XD
Old Peavey 4x10 that we've been using as a sub cause of lack of horn.

various pedals such as a vt bass and stuff.

Any suggestions on something easily rentable or ideas to get something similar to that?

Have you tried flats on the P? That usually thunks - and add a piece of foam at the bridge = thud :hyper:
I envy envy you being in the studio - I'm at the office...yeah, you're right, what am I doing on TB? ;)

Get the p-bass and pick firmly between the bridge and pickup. A compressor should help too.

Here I tried to mimic the song you posted. I used my jazz bass with chromes, neck pickup only with a pick slightly towards the bridge, then compressed a bit. I'm sure you could get much closer with an actual p-bass and roundwounds. I only got a little bit of "thunk"...

You think rounds and not flats? Maybe semi's and I'll grab a tight 15 as well?

Just for curiosity, how does someone in the states get up to Delorean, which is a fairly underground Spanish band? IIRC the bassist uses a battered Fender Mustang directly into D.I.

Canada.

Honestly my guitarist showed them to me, but we live off of music blogs. And you can buy anything online now. We just really liked them because we felt they were doing a more samply version of what we were.
