Had oportunity to buy an early '80's MTI era Ampeg SVT with a SUNN 2X15 cabinet loaded with JBL K-140 speakers for under a grand ... I am sad i missed the chance to hear the second channel on an SVT and particularly those drivers, they are supposed to be the sweetest sounding bass specific 15's ever. Telling myself i should be grateful for what i have isn't quite working yet ...

I always liked the Altec 421A's better than the JBL's myself. That is why I've sold off JBL's but not the Altecs.
Yes. The old vintage drivers couldn't take a lot of power. They were good at turning that power into sound though. They needed to be efficient as amp power was low.
I always felt JBL was on the conservative side in rating their drivers. I had a 215 loaded with K140's I used for years, powered by amps that had a lot more than 300 watts.
