Ghs: BRITE FLATS vs PRESSUREWOUNDS

Quick note for this thread:

Taking Brite Flats off my omni, and putting on...

round core brite flats, aka Crossovers.

There are prototypes on the GHS clearance page. Also a B. Gauges are rather light.

Happy with pressurewounds on my Big Al, just to tick all the thread boxes. Cheers.

Yeah, they’re intentionally light. I wanted to approximate the “bounce” and pull of actual upright strings, especially when you bow them (some players don’t need that, but I do). I need to tweak them a bit, but they’re a solid first attempt for the Omni.

Brite Flats vs. Pressurewounds...

Here's what's been happening with my two Fenders (P & J)...
My P bass wore a set of GHS Precision Flats from June 2018 to June 2019, while my J bass wore a set of Pressurewounds (ML7200) during that same time. My J got more play time than my P.
My P is now wearing the PWs (ML7200) and the BFs (L3075) are on my J. The P is getting more play time than the J.

The PWs provide both what I NEED (= a roundwound tone) and what I WANT (= smoother feel and no zingy brightness).
The BFs, while they do provide a smooth feel once broken in, their basic tonal character is a little too flatwound-like for what I NEED.

Verdict: Once I'm done with the BFs on my J, I'll be going back to the PWs, except this time I'll be trying out the M7200 set for D-G-C-F tuning.

Inspired by the CHiPS recording, I recently ordered another set of BFs for my fretless Jazz bass. Going to wear out the roundwounds currently on there some more before installing, but I do like that sound. I also like the roundwound sound. I also like tapewound on the fretless. Sometimes can be hard to decide with finality. I guess nothing wrong with swapping string types every so often, but I do fancy the idea of picking the one right set of strings and sticking with it forever. (Or until they are discontinued.) :-)

Im actually getting a new nut for my omni before putting these on, but the B response is better for my use than the big BF that came off. I dig the pizz response of the BF till I get to the B. Its weird. I can watch it vibrating, but very little sounds actually comes out. Under the bow it great. Ill write more after the set is on.

Just a follow-up to my post from last August...

I've just had a very interesting experience with the Brite Flats on my Fender J this past weekend. After having never been able to bond with the BFs, I finally decided to get my J out of its 6-mth hibernation so I could play it in church with the BFs one last time before ditching them for good.

I was quite shocked and surprised at how good these BFs sounded and felt this time around. "Are these the same strings I couldn't wait to get rid of after trying them for the first time in the summer of 2018?" For some strange reason, they all of a sudden felt so familiar and at home.

The whole weekend turned out to be a lot more enjoyable for me personally than I had anticipated. Not only that, I had a few people comment on how good the band sounded with my bass holding down the groove so well with a nice full-bodied punch that sat in the mix just right. Well... what do you know? ;)

I still do plan on switching back to PWs for the J next month. But the question in my mind right now is whether I should try the BFs on my P bass when it's time for a string change to see how they do? Just a thought...

@trothwell, did you ever get to try the BFs like you said you would back in Aug?

What guage is the crossover the low B? Doesn't seem to say on the web page.....unless I'm blind

I have pressure wounds on my P-bass. Like everyone is saying, they have a strong fundamental. I feel like I can accurately pull off round and flat covers by just adjusting the tone knob. If I were to get flats, I would stick to the regular kind. Brite flats sound like an oxymoron to me.
