Gibson Ripper - Bent Tuning Key

Hey all,

Before I start going crazy with pliers, I figured I'd ask around to see if there's a clever way to do this...

The D string tuning key on my Ripper is bent where the key attaches to the worm gear post. Looks like the previous owner smacked it against a wall/floor/whatever. The gear works properly so it's more of a cosmetic/ergonomic issue. Any recommendations before I start cranking on it with pliers?

Don't use pliers--the teeth will leave marks. Remove the tuner, remove the key, place the key on some carpet, cover it with a cloth, and gently tap it into shape with a hammer.

Hey Dave, it's already marred up (it's a 78) and I have a set of pliers I doctored up with tape and cardboard specifically for working on guitars. However, I do like your idea, I think I'll try it. Thanks!

You run the risk of the key snapping apart due to the metal being weakened from the initial bend. If it 's not too badly bent and still works I would leave it or be prepared to replace if attempt to straighten fails .
