Exactly! In a double-blind test, how many people could tell if Wynton Marsalis was playing his Monette or a Yamaha student model trumpet? I know that this is apples with oranges but, I'm a firm believer that any good bass player can get their sound with decent equipment. The better the equipment, the easier it will be.

I think a fair number of people could tell there was a difference. I doubt many could tell you which was which.

And, yes, I agree that any good player can sound like themselves on pretty much any gear they are given. However, there is something to be said for gear that inspires you to play and drags everything you have out on stage.

I messed around on harmonica a year before starting on the bass, when I was 14. I was fairly pedestrian
on it. I went into a music store to get a harmonica that sounded like Paul Butterfield. Right.
