Call Apex on El Cajon because they rent gear.
I'll rent out my rigs for gas money, free admittance and beers.![]()
That's a nice system for everyone involoved. I wish I could trust people in town with my rig. The last time I did, the bassist cranked my amp (Fender Bassman 250/210) ALL THE WAY up. Then proceeded to bitch about how he knew it wouldn't be loud enough as soon as I left the room to warm up my hands. He didn't realize that the PA was loud enough for me to hear him talking very clearly in the storage room. Dumb ass. His guitarist brought a 100 watt Marshall tube amp that he "needed" on 10 to "get his tone."
I don't have the most expensive amps.![]()
My guitarists together don't have 100 watts between them and we've had a long history (including last night) of struggling to keep our stage volume down enough to allow the vocals to cut through. That's a nice system for everyone involoved. I've had a few soundguys willing to mic my cab, but it depends on the quality of the PA and the quality of the soundguy. Nicer clubs will usually be more open to requests and suggestions than the crapholes we also play.now that the amp-less gig is over, maybe you could just pickup a VTbass and a decent DI anyway (or a BDDI).
I dont think iver EVER played a gig where my amp was mic'd (that is, when i got to go FOH at all).
Something like the VT will give you all the ampeg sound you need with cab simulation that is expecially usefull for fx users (especially fuzz/distortion users) as it means that the 5k roll off stops your distortion sounding like ass going through a PA.
Sure a second amp would be great, but a VTbass will cost less, pop in your gigbag and should your amp go down mid-gig (happens to the best of us) then at least you know that you've got a trustworthy tone going FOH. And in a situation like that, thats the most we can hope for.

That's my other issue. I use effects which could potentially overpower a rig and I'd feel like an absolute jerk if I were to blow the rig of one of the few people nice enough to loan their stuff to me.I understand why people are funny about other people using their amps. Personally i'll let whoever wants to use it. But on the other side, ive also probably ruined a few amps that werent mine too.
One gig a really hot female bassplayer (of the headlining band) let me use her bass amp (some vintage thing) for our set before theirs. I fried the damn thing, didnt even realise coz i was going FOH too and it sounded ok. She didnt talk to me much after that.

Those losers! What are you? A bunch of sissies? The guitarists in my band each have 100 watt SS amps, but have never turned them past three live or at practice.

Actually, they're the smart ones. If only more guitarists realized that the volume knob has a lot of positions between 0 and 10, the world would be a better place.
Good point. My 70's Twin that got stolen years ago did 100w and on three it would take your head off.
