Give me direction in my amp purchasing journey

So I'm in a progressive/thrash band that I recently created with some friends. I'm playing on a 30 watt roland cube which I don't think is really cutting it. It gets distorted at loud volumes and I just want something that will lead me to be more prepared when (or if) my band gets gigs.
One of my guitarists has a 100 watt amp and the other has a crappy 15 watt fender amp which he is working on replacing with something more like the other guitarist's. I've heard the rule where the bassist's amp should have 3x the power of the amps of the guitarists too so I was thinking in the 300 watt area. Is that enough volume for medium sized gigs (parks, large open areas)?

So this is where I need help because I know nothing about amps. Can you guys point me towards some good and reasonably priced (like no more than around $300 for the head and around $400 for the cab) amp+cab setups?

To get a rig big enough to hang with a thrash band, you'd have to go used. The 3x "rule" is not hard and fast. Like if your guitarist uses a 100w amp but only turns up a little, you can get by with less power. But if he turns way up and uses two 412's, 300w may not be enough. I would say get at least a 410 or 215 and a head that does at least 300w.

Used gear for sure. Check out GC's used site and filter by price! Ampeg, Fender, Eden, GK, Hartke(maybe), Markbass and Aguilar all make good amps. Check out a local store for a decent size cab

my Sam Ash has a huuuge used bass amp section - probably from guys like me trying to find the sound and volume of an SVT in a 10lb box!

It's out there "used" in my experience, you can never have too much power in a bass amp.

You should be on the look out for a used Peavey 215D and a GK 400RB or 700RB.
