The bassist for our band is about to get a new rig and we wanted to get some opinions first. Right now we have a Peavey Firebass 700 head and a Hartke 4x10 cab. It sounds ok but just isnt loud enough for our shows, especially since we only have 1 guitarist now. We were looking into getting a GK 100RB head, or maybe an Ampeg SVT 3 Pro. What are some opinions on these heads. Will they be louder than the Peavey right now? Also will either of these work well with an Avatar cab? Thanks!

How about runnin' the poor feller through the PA instead of buying a new amp?
Adding another cabinet would be quite helpful too...
Have him turn up the mids (boosting in the 200Hz region helps cut through)
or better yet...have the guitarist play LESS LOUD!!!

Yes, you will get a little more volume from the 1001RB, but adding another cab would probably work better. Maybe a 1x15? I'm sure either amp would work beautifully with an Avatar cab (from what I've heard they are the cat's pajamas). +1 on running him through the PA if possible
I can't speak to the SVT-3, but I use a GK 1001 RB-II with an Avatar 210 Neo cab.
It gets really loud, and I have plenty more where that came from. I like the sound, and it's a good value.
You should try both amps to see what tone you prefer.

Yeah, if the PA isn's an option, add another 4x10, a 1x15, or a 2x12 (even a 2x10 might work depending on how much more volume you need). That should move all the air you need to... the Peavey Firebass 700 should give you plenty of headroom especially with two 4 ohm cabs.
Both the Peavey Firebass and GK 1001RB are pretty similar in power ratings when they are operating at their optimal impendance - which would be 4 ohms for the GK and 2 ohms for the Firebass. They are both more powerful than the SVT-3 Pro.
I would stick with the Firebass - its a solid, reliable head that puts out a lot of power. If your bassist wants to be heard the best way to do this is with more speakers. Buy another cab.

Lots of possibilities if you need them.Hartke cabs are 8 ohms, so you're not getting the max power out of the Firebass. As has already been said, suggest he add another 8 ohm cab, or get a single 4 ohm cab. That should improve things. Anybody know the power rating of the Firebass at 8 ohms? Something around 275, possibly. The 4 ohm rating is I think 475.

If you're using both an 8 ohm cab and a 4 ohm cab, the 4 ohm cab is drawing more power from the amplifier than the 8 ohm cab I believe, thus resulting in it being louder. Best case you should use equal impedance cabs. 2 8 ohm cabs would probably be the best bet.
