GK 800rb problem

Looks like my less than a month old (and never gigged) Gallien-Krueger 800rb is going to the shop.

I bought the head from RMC (awesome guys, awesome price, good service, quick shipping time) on Jan 31st, and the GK head is already fussy. I was just trying to dabble in the world of bi-amping and thought the 800rb was a good choice. After just 4 rehearsals at only rehearsal volume the GK800rb is not living up to its reliable reputation for me.

I noticed from the first time i turned it on that the power amps were extremely noisy. I thought it was just the way the 800s are (could be), but my 1000rbII is not that noisy. I like to turn my power amps up, and then use the input gain for the volume control, but I cannot do this because when you turn up the power amps the hiss is too loud. The amp seems real anemic/bland compared to my 1000rbII.

Now when you turn the power on, it powers off, every other time it'll come back to life, and it even tripped a fuse in my band room, but basically it is going dead every other time you turn it on, or it turns on and then powers up a minute later. the fuse looks okay? Sounds like some issues. Before i take it into the long drive to the shop, any idea what it is?

Being as it's still under warranty, I recommend just exchanging it for a new one. I have found with modern electronic equipment of any kind that no matter how cheap or expensive, if it is going to fail it usually will right away. Otherwise you will get the full useful life out of it. Don't try to self diagnose, just exchange it IMHO.

Exchange it. The amp has a generally good reputation.

Curious, you have a 1001 RB II, why did you not go with a 700RB II?

i'm going to call rmc/ricks on monday and see if the can ship me a replacement, and i'll ship the damaged one back, but their return policy is 21 days and i am at @25 days. we will see.

if i had bought it at GC, i would of returned it to the store, but when you get stuff online (i bought this online), there are some extra hopps to go through.

no, i'm not going to take it apart or anything. when i died, i did check the fuse (in case it was a simple fix), and that's all i did. but it's not the fuse.


why did i get the 800rb, when i have the 1001rbII? I wanted a back-up head and I wanted to try bi-amping. my 1001rbII likes to pummel my 10" speakers (i have a 2x10 and a 1x15), and i thought that if i could send less low end to the 2x10, it would un-muddy my sound, and i wouldn't blow up the 2x10 cab.

question: does anyone else find the 800rb to be noisy? or was it just mine?

None of the 800 RBs I've played through have been noisy. I'm sorry you got a bad one. I hope it gets straightened out for you soon.

Yes take it from me and my bad EDEN wt800c mess that finally got straight.. EXCHANGE it for a new one.. if not get your money back right away.. do not allow them to send it out on repair...
