GK Backline 600 Tone

Going to give this one more shot before I just give in and buy an ampeg classic and 810, but I'm trying to get a type of punkish tone out of this thing and am afraid its near impossible.. Lol. Current settings are as follows being played through a GK 15 with an original model Mark Hoppus Bass:

• Channel Level A 3/10
• Contour maxed out
• Treble maxed out
• Hi Mid maxed out
• Low Mid 2/10
• Bass 2/10
• Boost maxed out
• Master volume 4/10

Tone I am trying to get is one such as this

Or this, possibly a little higher on the treble but you get the idea. (skip to like 3:10, for some reason it won't go there with the link.)


Basically wanting to hear the bass instead of feeling it. Wanting a very "attacky" high treble sound out of it. Open to any suggestions such as setting ideas or pedals that will achieve this sound. Just wanted to know if there was any other ideas before diving into a $2,000+ amp setup that will sit in my room . Lol.Thanks once again TalkBass!

Try using the channel A volume to control your overall volume. Turn off your contour, treble @ 2 o'clock, high mid @ 1 o'clock, low mid @ 11 o'clock, bass @ 10 o'clock, gain @ noon, and master @ 3 o'clock. You should be able to cut more lows and add highs from there. You may want to look into an overdrive pedal for more bite and color. New strings also go a long way in tone also.

You'll have a hard time getting "that tone" with that cab - you might want to check out an Ampeg SVT210AV or two. The matching head is the Ampeg Micro-VR but you could try your present head first .

While the EQ'ing is very important in this situation, you can EQ til the cows come home and it won't make a difference with that cabinet. What you would likely need is a 2x10 or 4x10 for the tone you are seeking. Don't rule out the low-mids and I wouldn't recommend diming anything on those amps. Make sure you're using a fresh set of SS rounds on that bass (I like DRs and D'Addarios for a bright, aggressive tone). Play with a nice, hard pick (Dunlop .88 tortex are fantastic IMO) and try to play a little closer to the bridge. An OD pedal might help, but the SVT and most other big tube amps are going to give you some more highs but a lot more midrange beef and definition. They can sound plenty bassy, but don't waste a lot of energy on the woofy woofy lows you get on most SS heads or the pingy high-end either.

Personally, I like the MB and RB series heads far more than the Backline series. They have some of that GK vibe, but they are cheaper for a reason. With little it costs to get an MB200 or MB500, I'd say pull the trigger on that and a proper cabinet. That 1x15 has to go IMO if you're after a punkish tone. Make sure you get something with a tweeter! I like Avatar cabs, they pair up pretty well with GK stuff

Thanks for all the replies! I'll try those settings above when I get home and see how they work for me, but I fear the others of you are right. That 15" may have to go.
