GK Goldline review

I gotta admit that they had me at the price.

I'm a middle-aged, well-paid professional so tossing out $300 for something I might use for a year, then go to something else isn't a problem (especially since you can always sell the cab and get some residual back out of it).

Not a "beginner," but not a "hard-rocker," either, and this rig seems just right for what I want.

I did order the 1x15 as well - hasn't come in yet. Looks like it's not as well thought of as the 4x10.:(

i own the 2x10 and 1x15 and play through them with either a backline 600 or a Traynor YBA-200....I love mine.

The 1x15 DOES need the 2x10's to lend it an even tone but when you match them together they are quite awesome. Go in sometime and mix the two, I'm fairly happy with everything but the weight...they're atrociously heavy =(

I was in GC yesterday and tried the gold 4x10 with a GK 1001 and switched to the neo 4x10 (same head). I much preferred the neo 4x10. I was not shopping for cabs, so I did not check them out in any detail though. I also played a little mark through the MN 1x15 and 2x10 but the MB cabinets struggled with the low B - even more than the GK cabs, but none of them handled the low B well enough IMHO.

I though the neo was rather lifeless. Maybe alot of the cabinets are more voltage reactive to specific heads. I disliked the sound of the NEO and the AMPEG SVT cabs on my randall. totally fell in love with the gold line stuff. Way nicer then hartke and I have had Hartkes plugged into my randall head and I have never been impressed. I know I really dislike the GK heads as well.

OK. I just bought the 1x15 last night at Guitar Center for a ridiculously low price(169) ... and immediately went to practice to "warm it up" to get it ready for a studio session tomorrow.... so here are my two issues..

#1. I agree with the sound issue. Seems to have a great 'air pushing' low end but you can forget about any highs cutting through. I tried everything on my EQ. But, that's not an issue cause I have an SWR 2x10 that I was planning on pairing it up with only at gigs.
#2. Possibly bigger issue. Progressively through the night a strange odor started emanating from the cabinet. At one point our drummer even described it exactly. Smelled like a package of band-aids ... sounds strange but true. If it was truly an electrical smell then I would've known. I've read a few reviews of people blowing the cones out right away so I was purposely careful not to overdrive it. has anyone else experienced the strange smell? If so I'll keep if for a little bit. Otherwise I'll probably take it back even though the deal I got on it was so outrageous.

Sure your amp isn't a bit short on power ? Distorting the output on the amp cuases it to go straigth DC which is very bad for the Voice coil. These 1 x15 are RMS 300 watts and seem to soak up the output from my head easily enough. They are a bit inefficient but make up for that with some good tone. the smell could be packing material. I am shoving 600 watts into 2 of the 1x15's and they have been flawless. In fact I have enough extra power to make them bark " Not good for the speaker" and They have been flawless. I think the 1x15 struggles with upper FQ ranges and works better Biamped. So far I am happy with my Goldline 4x10 and 2 1x15's. Killer tone very nice cut and excelent definition.

In fact at an audtion last night all the band could do was remark on how good the bass sounded chomping through the mix and rumbling the floor.

I'm pretty sure I'm not under powered. I have an Ampeg B2R which is rated at 200 watts(8 ohms) and 350 watts(4 ohms). I found it interesting that a sticker on the back of the cabinet says 200w even though the model I bought claims 300? I have various other cabinets that I run with that head and never really had a problem. I'm more concerned now judging by what you're running that I don't have a decent enough head to power my SWR 2x10 along with this new cabinet which is what I was planning on doing with all of this at gigs. The other purposes were to have multiple cabinets placed at various practice places since I'm in three separate bands. Been wanting to get a practice "combo" but this seemed like a better choice not to mention the great deal I got on it. Thanks for the reply. If you have any other suggestions about a decent type of setup for what I'm doing I'd appreciate it.

If your running that much power I doubt your DCing the speaker. very unlikely although Ampeg rating are generally from what I have seen a bit exagerated. What I might suggest however is something far simpler. Check the cables. I have seen 1/4 xlr style power cable burn up with a smell akin to smoldering electronics. The other possabilit is you got a roach it does happen. If the speaker plays fine though but seems a bit quiet or a given master volume setting I might be inclined to suggest having a look at your power cables.

I am modding my amp and all my cabs " I have extra peavy cabs as a JIC for speakon connectors" and I do not know if you head has that option.

Either way check the power cables. if that head is say 200 watts at 4 ohm is is running the speaker with like 40-50 volts and about 2 amps. That could get a worn cable hot enough to stink.

first off, thanks to "2x4strgkramers" for all the info. I really appreciate it. I ended up taking the goldline back and exchanged it for a GK backline 1x15. What a difference. This thing sounds great. And, no strange smell to worry about. I cranked it for a while last night and the low/high response out of it is awesome. I'm going to be using it at practice tonight with my loudest band so that'll be the true test. The only thing I'm concerned about at this point is that ;)similar styles of cabinets from other manufacturers had issues with the speakers blowing because of the "port/tube" going out the back that allowed dust to be sucked into the coil? Does that sound like it makes any sense? If so maybe I'll cut a piece of screen to put over the back of this new one.

I recently got a GK goldline 4x10 from a pawn shop , it's in great cosmetic condition, sounded good in the store, but I couldn't turn up too much. I hooked it up at rehearsal, and it has a rattle to it. I think it might be a connection issue, but I crimped them down tight, and the rattle is still there.I know there's not much as far as electronics go in the cabinet, what could be making the noise? Any suggestions?

Im using the GLX410. Its my first live rig cab and I have to say I really enjoy it. Its not my endgoal when it comes to the sound I want but for the moment its awesome.

Here a picture of it with my Hartke HA3500 top.

Not at all a personal thing, because I see a lot of similar comments here, but I gotta ask:

If that rig isn't your "endgoal" for your sound, what is? Why are you stuck with something that doesn't really fit what you want to do?

And how can it be "awesome for the moment?" It's either a good sound to your ears, or it never will be. I guess that's just how I think.

I'm just wondering about the thinking behind such statements, which as I say, I've seen here quite often.

im sorry for bumping an old thread here. i need info on these things i saw a 4x10 at my local gc for like 160 i think i might jump on it. im scared what if i could get something better on the used market for just as much maby a little more...and this would be my first rig im building...rigth now im running trough a backline combo (200 watter) and i was thinking about moveing up to stacks now...i need some experiances or anythign that could help me with this...thanks guys

Own the 4 x 10. Sounds okay. Heavy as hell, and the castors are cheap. They started falling off within the first month, and I kept finding the bb's all over the back of my car. I get rugburn on my forearms lifting it in and out of my hatchback. The side handles are weak too, they bent from lifting and moving it around. I recommend getting a dolly or something else to move the thing around.

I owned the 410. It wasn't that bad but it definitely wasn't as great as the GK neo 412 I have now. It had a good sound to it but didn't really project it out to the audience, wasn't that efficient. Really had to crank it to get enough volume, but it seemed to keep up alright. A lot of people said that the speakers blew pretty quickly. I had mine for a little over a year and never experienced any trouble. Kind of as a side note, I saw one sitting in a Guitar Center...the GK logo and "GLX" logo were upside down? Weird. Tried playing through it, the speakers were blown. Ouch. I would say that unless you really really like the sounds you can get through this cabinet, get something that's used and a little more higher up the line. And yeah, the casters mine came with went pretty fast. Quick trip to the hardware store fixed that.
