GK MB 212 II Rant. Not Happy

I LOVE my GK MB212 Gen 1. All the power I could ever need, and only 37 lbs!

I too had a warranty issue right out of the box. 5 of the 6 screws holding the motherboard were missing! GK was very responsive and offered to have me send it in for repair at their expense, however I had a local authorized repair facility within 10 miles, so I took it to them. Fairly fast turn around and my amp has been a tank ever since.

Good Luck!

Wow, about 15 years if running an instrumentation service dept., never saw anywhere near that level of incompetence and lack of QC. I would have insisted the customer have a new one the next day, even if it were discovered at 4:55 PM that day.

I was looking at getting a GK Fusion 500 awhile ago but have since decided to go all tube. Were I still interested in getting a hybrid I would not go with a GK product. This kind of treatment is unacceptable from a company that expects you to spend hundreds on their equipment. I've gotten better customer service from my local GC. Very sad.

I know that somethings slip though the cracks, and GK has a great reputation and they have a great presence on this forum so I wasn't about to sick the hounds on them, but i am a garage band bassist so my needs can certainly differ from others.

I received a bum unit, but it was made right in a timeframe that i was happy with. Next time i go amp shopping, GK will still be my first stop. Hartke, my second.

I agree and a service event can be turned into a sale event in the future. But... that ain't no crack it fell through! They have boards missing in the floor if that passed QC and electrical testing.

I reported every single warranty failure to Engineering (who I worked for) and the production engineer. If there was anything visual about the problem, I made sure everyone in the group that handled that particular item saw it. We did have a lower than standard warranty failure rate, but I caught the flack, so I was sure to share it with my friends :D

I know it might be asking too much, but I really would like them to just send a new amp. I'm REALLY getting tired of being without this amp since March.

The latest from GK this afternoon (and remember we're almost in July and I've been without the amp since March.....)

I spoke with the tech today and discussed the issue and gave him some information to check for other possible causes.

In my mind, the proper thing to do is have a new amp express shipped to you tonight and have that tech send the faulty unit back to GK for a full engineering investigation to determine how something like that got produced and through QA in the first place. First there is the customer goodwill piece. Second, this type of ongoing problem is not what any manufacturer should want to be known for saddling their customers with - if this is not a "one off" issue, it's better to find that out as quickly as possible and make appropriate corrections in the production and QA process.

I can tell you that if you were working with me at Sweetwater, this situation would not happen.

Let me know if I can be helping you with anything.

You must have missed the thread where a player bought a damaged bass from SW and was sent out a used bass as a "new replacement."
I received excellent service from your company but these Murphy situations can happen to any well-intentioned company.

When I bought a new GK from an online vendor, two of the feet were deformed. I figured, no big deal. I called GK and they UPS'ed me four new feet free of charge. Never contacted the online seller at all. The techie followed up with an email offering me to directly contact him for any needs in the future.

My two GK's run flawlessly. Sorry chap but I think you were the victim of a perfect storm. The stars were aligned for disaster. One thing I know for sure is I would never set foot in that store again.

An afterthought. Have you thought about contacting Bass Player magazine or any other large online professional equipment magazine? They have the attention of manufacturers in the industry and would probably love to hear about this big-time fiasco. I think someone like BP could very successfully mediate for you. And if they DO contact you, tell them at this point you don't even want that amp back, please send you a new, sealed replacement amp, thank you. very much.

i would love to hear that GK is taking care of the OP, but they knew nothing about this issue for at least two months of time when it was in the shop. whether the shop is an authorized GK repair shop or not, they weren't working with GK under a warranty fix.

have we determined that the shop is definitely a GK authorized shop?

All I read is an assumption and a confirmation bias because you agree with the assumption. I never make assumptions in instances like this. I would call them, and ask them to take care of it, or recommend a repair facility with a good reputation in the area. I'm not interested in interpretations and hearsay- I want direct answers from the source.
Exactly..which is why they should have called the repair center and found out exactly what was going on...why play hands off/ignore game or just take the customer at face value...call, investigate and react based on the full data...

I agreed with an assumption? When?
..I just said GK should look into it immediately and get the facts...that little bit of effort would have
A) reassured the customer
B) resulted in the full story/facts
C) hastened a resolution

Zen G hit the nail below imho

Pudgychef, when you said Zen G "hit the nail", you agreed with Zen G's interpretation, or assumption of what was said. GK did not say, " We couldn't care less", as he interpreted it. In fact, what GK was quoted as saying was, "we have no control over the repair facility...we just send parts there".
That means exactly what it means. There was no hidden meaning in that sentence. Factually, GK has no control over a 3rd party repair facility. They have no idea of their work load, staffing, standard operating procedures, and they're not in their chain of management. They provide service parts to the company when they're ordered, and that, as they stated, is the extent of their relations and affiliation to the company.

GK is not in a position to say, "hey company, you're not repairing this persons amp fast enough. You need to put his amp repair order in front of everyone else's". If they were in that position, every manufacturer that facility repairs
Could leapfrog each other, barking orders to the company, effectively eliminating their own management.

As I said before, it's the repair facilities fault, up to that point. If GK still isn't cooperative, that's a different situation, and not what I was commenting on. Some manufacturers go above and beyond. That's exceptional business. Just because a company doesn't drop ship a product on their own dime immediately upon hearing about an issue, doesn't mean they have poor customer service. A companies' warranty card has their obligations, conditions and exceptions for repairs under warranty.

Yes, Protech (the repair shop) is a authorized GK repair facility.

True. GK is perfectly within their rights to adhere to their warranty obligations as stated in the fine print of my purchase agreement. Just as Washington Music Center has every right to wash their hands of the situation because the amp is now 6 months old.

Just as I have every right to complain about the continual issues with my amp and the slow service.

I said nice things earlierin this thread about Protech fixing my GK combo a couple years back. I take it back now. I pulled my MB212-ii apart last night to line the cabinet with mattress foam and saw a rig job they did. They did a speaker swap on my combo as I had a faulty one that was covered under warranty. Somehow they broke the terminal block off the new speaker and JB Welded it back on. That didn't make me very happy when I saw it.

Yikes. That does stink.

Not to be all "Other then that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?" But any chance you can take some photos of taking the GK apart and how you're adding the foam?

If I ever get my amp back and decide to keep it, that's a mod I would like to do.
