Double Bass GK MB150S-112 Extension Cabinet

I have a GK MB150S-112 and wanted advice on an extension cab with a 15" speaker for it. I already know about the GL 112MBX but that has a 12" speaker. I play both upright
and electric bass through the MB150S-112 and want to
be able to be heard with a drummer. Thanks.

One of my interim rigs was my MB150E-112 and a DIY 15" speaker. If the speaker is fairly efficient, it will be able to keep up with a competent drummer. But not up to a drummer plus loud guitars.

Should you move in that direction, I figured out that my rig would actually be louder if I left the internal speaker of the MB combo turned off, allowing the full 100 W to feed the extension.

I am not affiliated, but... look a few pages down into the electric bass classifieds.

For getting the most oompf out of your little amp, look for a speaker with very high sensitivity, like the EA Wizzy with 103db 1w/1m - it is sensitivity that is the best indication of how much bang for your buck you are going to get. (And lower impedance draws more power from the amp, but find out the lowest impedance extension speaker GK recommend for the MB 150.)

If you could do it with a 12" instead of the 15 than I'd go with GK's own MBX extension cabinet because it's been matched with the MBS and MBE. I'm not sure that it's gonna be loud enough, kinda depends on the drummer.

Hi I use an swr 1 x 10 and its the same physical size as the mb 150 plus the bass cab goes deep too.

I'd throw out a vote for the Bag End S15-D. Not too heavy for a 1X15 (48 lbs. or so), "tight" enough sounding to work O.K. with DB, and they've been around for years so you should be able to find a good deal in the used market.

I agree the GK 112MBX would be a good match for the MB150S. First of all, the GK MB150 is voiced to work with its internal speaker, which has limited response in the upper mids and highs, and the 112MBX uses the same driver as the MB combo. (Because of the MB150's built-in voicing, it's very hard to dial out enough upper mids and highs with some other speakers IMO.) Also the GK 112MBX is relatively light (under 20 lbs.), and, together with the MB150, it's still a very manageable package. Finally, I have used an MB150 with a 112MBX, and the increase in volume, low end and headroom over the MB150 by itself is quite impressive.

Whatever you choose for an extension speaker, make sure it's an 8 ohm cab, since the minimum load impedance for the MB150 is 4 ohms.

I've got the previously mentioned Bag End 15, which I occasionally use as an extension to my GK MB150S combo amp.

The Bag End definitely helps get more sound out there, but it works better for bass guitar than DB. It's rather boomy and vague-sounding on DB, which means the extra volume actually may not be all that helpful. For bass guitar, no problem.
