Gk Mb210 + Gk GLX 410

I am needing to boost my bass presence to compensate for two rather loud guitarists. Right now I have an mb210 combo amp, but even that seems to be a bit strained.

I think I need an extension cab. The problem is both money and availability are an issue. I know the MBE210 is coming soon but might be a bit high on my price list.

I can get my hands on a GLX 410 tomorrow for about $100 bucks.

My first question is, will the GLX 410 be of any use for me.

Will be worth at least $100

Will it hold me over a year or two before I can get my hands on a MBE210?

I don't want to toss my money away on something that won't work, but I'm willing to "make do" with pretty good for the time being.

Advise?

The GLX cabs had some problems with speakers easily being blown. I don't know how many watts people were putting into the cab but when I had a glx 410 I put in 350 and never had any trouble. With the MB210 you'll be putting 250 watts into it. Should be fine. Make sure it works though...100 bucks for that cab seems just a little low.

It's a used cab, but I will check it out first.

I'm just not sure if it would end up being a waste of my money, even at $100. I need to keep my budget under $200 for a cab extension. That limits my choices a lot.

For $100 it might be an idea to make sure it has all of its original speakers and not some substitutes which could drop the cab's impedance below 8 Ω.

Be sure you actually get to test drive the GLX410...push it.

Be sure you use just a bass head to drive the cabinet. You don't want to hear the output of the MB210 when it covers up the sound of the GLX410. What you want to hear is the sound from the GLX410 to be sure it functions properly.

Take someone who knows and understands pro audio. You play, he listens. He listens for scratching, rubbing, pops, and any other non musical noise.

Open the speaker cabinet and check the brand and model on the speakers. Be sure they match. BEFORE you go, check the GK website to make sure you understand what brand speakers are installed in the GLX410 at the factory.

If the GLX410 LOOKS GOOD and if the GLX410 SOUNDS GOOD, then the odds are in favor that the speakers and cabinet were reasonably well taken care of.

Remember, if you can get through 60 days (more or less) there WILL be used 210MBE cabinets on the market from those who did not care for the sound and returned them. If there is any "constant" in today's music equipment market place, it is that the online giants and the mega discount retail stores affiliated with those "giants" will take nearly anything back within 30 days. Most of those discount stores will drop the price another 10-15% if you will buy one of the "used-returned in nearly new condition" products.

Granted, that would still be a long ways from the GLX410 for $100.

So, go check the GLX410 out and decide how it looks and how it sounds and how it looks inside. Then think about how much longer the delivery will be for the 210MBE.

But personally...

$100 for a great (albiet used) bass cabinet is very fair. (I would just need to convince myself that this specific cabinet is still "great".) So, keeping the resale value of the 410 in mind, I would not hesitate to buy it and plan to sell it later after I was ready to buy "something else".
