GK on top - - Ampeg on bottom?

I'm looking to get a new head & historically I've always been Ampeg on Ampeg, but I've been hearing a lot of people saying that GK on Ampeg is the way to go. GK gear seems to be a little lower priced so I always get a tad bit apprehensive buying cheaper. I can play both @ the store "but at least for me" playing amps in a store never gives me a good representation of what I'll be doing w/ it since I'll spend hours dialing it in @ home.

Anyone have good or bad experience pairing up the GK w/ Ampeg.

i use a 1001rb-ii on top of an 810e

sounds great man. Gk heads dont sound like ampeg heads, but that doesnt mean they dont sound great through an ampeg cab.

I don't have direct experience with GK heads on Ampeg cabs, but I have played a Yorkville solid state 400 watt head driving an Ampeg 8x10 and it souned nice. To me, it sounded tighter than the all-SVT rig I used - if that's your thing.
Dwight Yoakam's bass player a few years back (Taras Prodaniuk, I think) toured with a 400RB driving an Ampeg 8x10.

i A/Bed the 1001 on the 810 and the SVT classic on the 810, and found that while the SVT was warmer and maybe a little punchier, the GK also had really great growl and tightness.

whatever floats your boat! any brand head should work.

I play a GK800RB on top of a SVT410HLF. Sounds great! I'm downsizing to a smaller cab though since I'm not gigging anymore and the cabinet is for sale in the classified section of the forum.

Is GK cheaper or is Ampeg overpriced... hmmmm. In my experience, GK heads are real un-fussy about the cab. If the cab is decent - it will be a good sounding rig. If the cab sucks, then the rig will too...

GK on Avatar (112 + 210) is sweet
GK on Schroeder (21012L) was killer.
GK on Bag End 2x10 - amazing
Gk on Bag End 2xS15-D - great
GK on JBL Cabaret 15's -

Some better than others in that list but they were all totally giggable.

I like the sound of a gk going into a 610hlf, I use a VT Bass pedal to drop the freqs into Ampeg territory though. That cab needs to be pushed and the 1001rbII does a good job of it.

Ran my G-K 800rb into my Ampeg 215 load with Altec 421A's for 6 years before going to a G-K NEO 412, always got/get compliments on both!
Don't think of G-K as cheap, they are far from that, just not tube (with the exception of the preamp on the Fusion 550).

I used a GK BL350 on Ampeg cabs (4x10 & 8x10) from 2005 to 2008 (Jan) with great results. I also used an SVT-II (when I fealt like hefting it). It comes down to tube warmth over solid state dry and clear. I find a touch of overdrive pedal or preamp to a solid state amp gives you the best of both worlds.

Good stuff. I have a 700RBII head paired with a 410hlf and is is very sweet. Too bad I'm having back problems and need something more convenient. I do love the sound though.

i used to play a 700RB II through an 810, it was fantastic. in fact im trying to get a hold of another GK head as we speak!

I used the GK1001 and Ampeg Svt810av. It was sweet! I would definitely recommend it.
