GK OR EDEN ?!

Besides the obvious answer, I am having a situation with my GK rig. I use a 2nd generation 1001rb amp with a backline 4x10 cab, and a fender p-bass deluxe with active pickups.

I just replaced one speaker on the cab about 2 months ago, and am now again hearing speaker distortion when i play at the volume i like, which i have the -10db pad in with no amp clipping. It sounds like more than 1 speaker is fuzzy when i crank the bass up to a loud, but not ridiculous, level. The cab is still capable for shows but sounds like it's getting worse.

I have a couple ideas in mind while trying to fit my budget, so i am reaching out for suggestions. My band's music requires a lot of sub, and slap/finger tapping presence.

Should I:

1.)Add a 15 to my rig and replace the speakers on my 4x10?
2.) Add the 2 x 10 speakers from my old GK Combo amp to my rig?
3.) Trade my cab in for an eden 4 x 10?
4.) Completely swap my rig for Eden gear (would be difficult in my budget)

These are the ideas i've had so far, and i need to make a move fast because i have shows every weekend.

What's the obvious answer? :p

I'd definitely fix the 410. I'd only change gear if I'm positive the current ones don't fit for tone and the new ones positively fit the tone.

In any case keep the gk head. I know i would since i like those rb heads (except the weight)

The 1001RB II puts out 460 watts at 8 ohms, more when slap and pop are done. Your cab is a entry level cab rated at 400 watts that you are now putting into heavy use. UPGRADE YOUR SPEAKER CAB while you still have one. The amp head is fine but your killing that cab with it!!

The gallien-krueger mbe410 bass cab would be a good choice. I plan to get one myself real soon. also I understand what you're going through. I have the same issue with my gallien-krueger goldline 4x10 bass cab. like your backline bass cab, my goldline cab has been making static noises because it has a blown speaker. I would suggest start saving some cash for a new bass cab. replace the blown speaker if you have to. when the time comes, buy a new cab.

You have a really nice amp, but kind of a crappy cab...sorry! If you more or less like the sound, I'd consider An MBE or Neo 410. If you want to stay with one cab, maybe consider a 4 Ohm cab to make the most of your amp? Or two 8 Ohm cabs...I personally think the 410 Neos are awesome...Eden has their fans, but those are very different rigs...personally, I'd stick with GK

The Eden 410xlt pumps out some serious volume (I used to own two of them), however, I suggest you go to your local store and get what you can afford. Check out the stock online first and figure out the budget series of cabs and the "better" cabs. Buy the more expensive model - typically the higher up models can handle more of everything, are louder, and sound better.

If it is you have to go with it, it is the best bass amp ever made by human. It is soo good that you can play acoustic or electric guitar with it!
Just like your instrument will produce , but only louder. Any of their amp or cab just awesome.

I can't comment on the GK cabs, but I own a D410XLT, and I like it a lot. When I think of these cabs I can hear Mike Watt's "Contemplating the Engine Room" album in my head. His sound, live and on the album, is what sparked my interest in Eden.

If you are on a tight budget, you can often score a pretty sweet deal on a used 410XLT. There are a few used Edens for sale in the $400-$500 mark. These are some solid quality 410s in my book. But as always, try before you buy if you can.

Good Luck!

It way be totally unfounded, but with slap and tap there has been many used Eden cab pics here with creased cones? The 1001RB II has no limiter to be soft on speakers, what you ask it, it does with great punch (often above its rated power). That is my concern for what its worth?

I agree w/ B-string! I'm in a similar situation. I have a 700rbII running two SBX410's and while I love the sound of these cabs, they're only rated at 400w each. I recently had to replace the tinsel leads on one of the speakers - not a big job but cause for concern nonetheless. Look into the NEO or RBH line of cabs. Both are rated at 800w and should be a great match for your head!

the p deluxe and the 1001rb should be an extremely versatile (and clean sounding) combo. Def look into getting a better cab (preferably NEO, RBH, or MBE).

Another thing I would take a look at is the EQ on your amp. The 700rb and 1001rb have extremely sensitive EQ controls. I strongly suggest you do a forum search on "gk 1001rb settings" once you purchase a new cab to really find the 1001's sweet spots. They are truly amazing SS amps.

For a while I played my trusty GK 1001RB-II through a pair of Eden D410-T cabinets... some of the best tones I've ever gotten. Though I play through GK cabinets now (for weight and a brighter/cleaner sound), I have to say that Eden cabinets are ten thousand times higher quality than the Backline series. As much of a GK junkie as I am, I simply cannot find it in me to defend the Backline or Goldline series of cabinets.

Don't get me wrong, Eden heads are fantastic, but if I were you I would try and swap for an Eden D410-T or their newer line. Absolutely don't add a 15 to the mess; the 1001RB through a pair of 410's with no phasing issues ROCKS.

Other cabinets to consider (and I can vouch for their awesome synergy):

Hartke HyDrive 410
GK 410RBH (tonally very different from the Eden D410 series... I actually used one 410RBH and one D410 together in a stack and it ended up sounding great!)
GK Neo 410
GK Neo 212
SWR Goliath 410

mighta been what caused me to tearup a couple drivers in my Ampeg SVT-410 w/GK1001RBI back in the day, coupla times. :rollno: Later a SWR Goli III w/1001, no issues.

Now until recently, I ran a LMII or F1 into a 4 ohm, Eden 410XLT, 9pc band, 5 string active basses, no PA support...yeah I know that sucked...and drove the room with funk/disco bassness. The rig never sweated. I sold the Eden/SWR cabs for my new, lighter Epi-UL/TC-RS/GB-Neox cabs I now gig, still w/MB heads and a STM-900.

Cept for the weight, I sure miss the tone of those (much heavier) cabs. OP maybe two 8 ohm cabs or a pro-series, 4 ohm, Eden/SWR/GK or similar cab would work for ya. As always use your ears; easy on the lows/loudness.

Bargains out there on these fine cabs, used.
