GK punch... Is it in the head or cab?

Just wondering if anybody has tried combining their GK heads with other cabs and GK cabs with other heads. Ive only owned a GK combo so I couldn't try different amps or speakers at the time. Is the punchy GK tone due to the cab, head, or both?

I'm Trying to figure out where most of that tone came from that I miss so much from my neo 700-rb-II combo.

i would say the head...a lot of the old school GK tone you heard about back in the day was generated, probably more often than not, depending on where you were at, through a hartke xl cabs

Afew years ago I had a Ashdown combo that sounded rubbish, so I tried it with a Harte aluminium 4x10 (forget the model) and the tone out of the cab was incredible.

Ended up cutting the "head" out of the cab and building a box around it, the tone was that great.

I also tried the cab with a Trace Elliott head and the tone was even better, so that cab should imporve the tone.

could always try it out in your local if they have a hartke aluminum 4x10 to check...

GK tone is in the head as far as I'm concerned. I've hooked my 2001RB up to a variety of cabinets from other manufacturers and it always sounds like a GK.

I almost always used my GK heads with other brand cabinets. The GK sound is in the head. My favorite combination was the 400RB with a pair of Yorkville 1x15 cabinets. Not expensive speakers by any means but a fantastic sound and quite a lot of volume. Certainly enough for any clubs (sometimes a single cabinet) and even outdoor stages.

No kidding!!! My old 400RB with a Hartke XL stack, (1-4X10--1X15) killed. That was a monster sound.

punch starts at the bass, flows through the head, then exits the cabinet to knock you out. seriously though, the head seems to be a large component.

good to see I wasn't the only one--> many heads and cabs have come and gone and even though I have my mesa 400+ with a PH1000---> I still prefer my 400RB through the house cabs!!! and tougher than a 300yr old anvil too

Funny you should say that. After the mid 80's- early 90's rig stated above, (by the way most duty was with a Steinberger XL-2) I sold the Hartke boxes and used 2 Eden 210 XLT's. Another monster tone machine! I did a stint with an Eden WT-800, but dumped it because the old GK sounded better. I actually still have that amp. It's going on 25 yrs old and still functions and sounds as good as ever.
