GK rails in a pedal?

As an electrical engineer in training, I'm really loving this thread. I love to build pedals, and I want to learn more on how they are designed. It's too bad I'm busy with exams right now, or I'd be breadboarding along with you guys. I'm definitely going to take a crack at it when my schedule allows.

Great field of study! Good luck on your exams.

Your first assignment after exams is to convert these output drivers to MOSFET.:D

That would be really cool to build this pedal. If its not horribly hard. Looks like you guys have put a lot of thought and work into it and I cant wait to see/hear the final product!! +1 million. However, the danger would be that our collective wallets would get injured - even though I am *not* a fan of GK amps or their sound, it has been so fun to follow this process and thread that I am going to strongly consider buying one of these once done.

JohnK already has his Overdrive/Fuzz quest thread that has hurt many wallets :)

I happen to love GK so this pedal is right up my alley. I have had the GK Diesel Dawg clone but that wasn't quite what the Rails pedal is to my understanding. The Rails pedal is the GK growl people always talk about. IMO, if and or when this pedal sells, it will be in demand. I believe there are tons of guys out there that have used or are on the lookout for GK amps for the legendary growl factor. Thats how I see it anyway. The word growl has always been synonymous to GK as long as I can remember.

hey Frank, what's the polarity of C1? in most circuits, I usually have the negative facing lug 3 of the output pot but in this one's case, i'm not sure.

I would use a non-polar electro for C1, because there is no bias voltage on either side of the cap to hold polarity. You could use a 1uF for C1.. it will still have a corner freq of 16Hz with a 10K pot and a zero ohm R7 (worst case).

Oh definitely, there are tons of GK fans out there, this has the potential to sell really well, even beyond TB. For me personally it has been the watching of the process that has been so compelling and interesting. I'd be willing to bet that if other pedal builders did this sort of an interactive "demo" of sorts with conceptualizing and designing a pedal, it would draw other people in and make them fans of the builder, if not a customer for the product. I already had huge admiration for John and his contributions to this site, and desired his pedals before, but there is something special about what is transpiring here. :)
 
I do have non-polar 4u7's so I think that i'll just use that for C1.
I have 10u non polars but they're pretty big (tall) so I think that the 4u7 will work fine.

4.7uF is a good value for C1. The 10uF was overkill, but I like to go way too big so that when testing freq response the input and output caps do not make an impact on the results for the rest of the circuit. This amp runs flat from 20-20KHz and all of the circuitry for the audio signal in the amp section (between its input and output caps) is DC coupled. I just think DC coupling is so cool! I know!---->NERD!:laugh:

I am anxious to hear what this sounds like. So if you guys want to contribute to me, then please post sound files of this pedal. That's more than enough for me, I did this for the fun of it... John is the one who needs hardware.:thumbsup:

I got the newest V4 version pcb etched and drilled so all I have to do is mount the components.

it'll probably be several hours before I can test it since it's new years eve (and i'll be spending time with my wife) but as soon as it's completed, i'll post some sound clips.
luckily, I just found another stash of LF353N's (10 more) so after testing it with a TL072, i'll pop one of those in it.

If John didn't jump in with all of the prototyping we would not have made it to version 4. I have never been 3,000 miles away from the first prototypes of one of my schematics... I'm usually only inches away from it. So this is a first for me, this was fun and I could see me doing something like this again in the future.
