GK rig idea

I'm very close to being Ampeg free for the first time in 15 years. I'm a fan of their signature tone but I'm looking to go lighter with more punch. I'm contemplating a 700rbII 1x12 combo stacked on top of a Neo 2x12. I figure the combo would be good for practice and acoustic gigs while both units together would be enough for my metal band (Tool, RATM, etc.). Any thoughts, objections? Will the 1x12 handle sharing equal power with the 2x12? I know RMS-wise it should but I've blown speakers with an unbalanced rig before (2x10 on a 2x15).
 
im not sure but are th 212's available as 8 ohm. i thought they were 4 ohm only. if this is the case you will only be able to run a single 212. personally i would go ahead and get the 1001 and a 212 or 2 112's. an 8 ohm 112 and 8 ohm 212 will work together but might not be optimal. the single will definately be stressed much more than the double as the driver will be recieving twice the power as each of the other two. you might not hear it complaining under the roar of the other two drivers and blow it. with relatively low power handling systems such as a single 12 it is best to run equal power to all drivers. larger systems with say multiple 10's and 15's i wouldn't sweat it as much. i wouldn't be near as critical of your plan if you hadn't mentioned that you play in a metal band.
 
The GK Neo 212 is 8 ohms.

I have both the 212, and a 112. Both cabs are 8 ohms. Both cabs plugged into my 700rbII makes for a wickedly loud rig.

Lately, I've been just plugging into the 112, and I'm super impressed with how good this cab sounds. It makes for a very nice, portable mini stack.

Unless you're playing at ear bleed volumes all of the time, and have no PA support, I would skip the recommendation for the 1001...... At normal volumes, it's not nearly as warm as the 700.

Yes, even one Neo112 sounds great. I have two, and get by on most small club rock gigs with just one, even without going through the PA. The 700RB-II has plenty of power, and the Neo112 is efficient and very full-range, so it works.

I think your plan is fine, though I'd get head/cab instead of the combo. That way you could take just the 212 for intermediate gigs. And then maybe your other cab could be a Neo115. I bet that's a sweet rig.
 
hey man ,im from sylacauga , right down 280 from you . quinten berry from the uglistik has been using that combo with a 112 extension on a lot of shows . both our bands were in tuscaloosa a while back and he was playing at 4th and 23rd with just the combo . of course he had a lot of f.o.h. support in there and also their band has very nice in ears , but the sound was still really good . but im not sure if you could make a usa spector sound bad ... especially with a phenom like q.b. playing it .....
 
There's a lot of users worldwide trying to downsize and lighten his rigs; digital powers, toroidal transformers and neodymium magnets helps a lot with our back sanity. Sound not compromised, sound improved !. More efficient cabinets are less hungry of power than classic and vintage ones. The sound pressure it's incredible.
I'm one of the guys in that way. I sold my 200W SS combo and recently bought a head + cab configuration. More portable, fits in my car backseat, more flexible and more powerful. The new adquisition was a GK1001RBII head and a Neo212 cab.
IMHO go for it. But if your plan it's a two cab config... the 700RBII put the same wattage at 4 ohms than the 1001RB at 8ohms, plus more cone area to push more air = more volume.
