It's been awhile since I've done the hi-fi thing, so I hope I remember this correctly, but "Class A" (or single-ended) has to do with the way the signal is processed- the signal follows one path and thus there is no problem with realignment later. With class AB and such, the signal is split (lows vs. highs) and when it comes back together, the mids don't always line up right (it's startlingly apparent with vocals on music) and it sounds different. I thought it was a bunch of mumbo jumbo until i actually sat and listened to the same cd through a "ab" rig and then an "a" rig. Wow. It's expensive but keeps the signal pure and sweet.
