http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5Dkr5HGNsI Can anyone figure out how I would get this tone out of an Ampeg SVT-CL into an Ampeg SVT-810E using a Carvin LB75 with a Carvin HB2 humbucker?
. Not exactly answering your question, but i found this in regard to the tone (in case you find you can't do it with your gear and want to spend some cash): http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/f-o-h/441681-bass-tone-help-flames-dark-tranquillity-soilwork.html
Turn the ultra-hi switch on the SVT, crank mids hard on setting 4 or 5, crank the treble on your bass, and set the gain to where you first start to hear overdrive. Easy.
Thanks Jimmy M, I appreciate the honest help. I run my bass in passive though. So since I'm passive, should I crank the treble on the SVT?
Absolutely! Of course, that's all a matter of taste, but I got super close to that sound just now with my SVT rig and a Guitar Factory 4-string neck-thru with EMG PJ's and the active treble control cranked. You might want to change a couple of my settings but you definitely want to turn on the ultra-hi at least.
The key to that kind of tone is brand new strings (stainless steel wouldn't be a bad idea) in fairly heavy gauges combined with very low action and aggressive right hand technique to get a nice snap off the frets on the attack but not excessive buzzing during the sustain. Compress very hard and use a bright overdrive set to a decent but not overbearing crunch.
Righto...hence the reason for cranking the gain on the SVT-CL. That's exactly what it does...a decent but not overbearing crunch with a goodly amount of compression. Hey man, congratulations on getting the cover of Bass Player! Sure, you had to share with Evan Brewer and Liam Wilson, but that's still huge!
Thanks Nolly, I was trying to get something similar to your tone last week for my technical metal band...
Circle K or Carvin (la bella) nickel strings. You will want to keep the tension fairy low under 40 lbs. Cut some mids out, pick hard.
