Going back to a 5er but need wide string spacing.

My #1 bass is a Vintage Fender P/J mut. I'm getting rid of all my 5s with 16mm & 17mm bridge spacing. What's a good 5 string bass with similar electronics to my P/J. The 5 will be used occasionally and MUST feel equivalent to my fender 4 spacing. Any ideas?

Depends on your price range, and whether you're willing to consider J/J and soapbaor pickup arrangements as well as P/J. But there are a fair number of wide-spaced 5's out there these days. I'd definitely look at the Lakland Skyline models. Yamaha also makes some very nice 5's with wide spacing. The Ibanez BTBs are nice, too, but they're neck-through and starting to get away from your basic Fender-type bolt-on.

In a higher price range, there are a ton of options. The P/J that pops to mind immediately for me is the Sadowsky Metro, but I know there are lots of others.

MTD- I picked one up at GC, and it felt like playing a 2x4 only a little thinner in profile- didn't work for me, but if you want something with wider strings, they may work. Another option would be, as suggested, a Lakland- well-built and not prohibitively expensive for a used Skyline

I would also recommend Lakland 55-02. When I was looking at a 5'er my chief complaint was also string spacing which was satisfied after playing the Lakland 55-02. Check one out.

Give the new 2010 American Standard Precision V a try. Very nice bass IMO and with wide spacing. Coming from a 4 string Precision and not normally a five string player, I felt right at home when I picked the Precision V up.

Consider a Squier Pro Tone. Excellent build quality from Korea like the Lakland Skylines. Some of the best fret work I have on any of my basses. I was shocked when I got it from a member here and how nice it was.

Nothing like a Fender, but Ibby BTBs are awesome. 35" scale (and bolt-ons are out there). Mine had Bart soapbars and a nice active preamp.

That or a MIM Jazz Deluxe V...

Plus the RB5 has an asymmetric neck profile that is super comfortable.

The Fender American Standard Precision V is also an excellent bass. It has only a split-P pickup, but you could possibly mod it with a J.....
