I was wondering...if you have a DI box (which has a Hi-Z 3-prong output) and use a 1/4" adapter to plug into a recorder (because it's a cheap little 4-track), do you bring all kinds of new noise into the mix? I'm trying to figure out a quick little recording setup without breaking down and getting a new recorder here.

Hmmmm ... most of the DI's with XLR outputs that I've ever heard of are low impedance. They're used to enable you to run longer cables and to match the impedance of the input device to the board. If it's a quality DI, I doubt that it's going to introduce much additional noise.
