While there's been a lot of talk here about smaller speaker cabinets, I've found myself going in the other direction and have been using a mid-70's Walter Woods Mini Amp with a custom cabinet loaded with an Eminence OEM 15-inch driver with a neodymium magnet. The cabinet is 18x18x12 (inches) and is made of light 1/2-inch plywood. With the neo driver, it's surprisingly light and easy to schlep. The driver has a 4-ohm voice coil, so the old WW Mini Amp can deliver its max power (about 120 watts). Best of all is the sound. The Mini Amp and the 15-inch speaker are a great combination with a nice retro vibe. Also gets surprisingly loud, with pants-fluttering low end. No preamp or HPF is needed, and the 15's cone barely seems to move except on the loudest low notes, which are very satisfying. 
I've owned lots of cabinets over the years, many with smaller drivers, but I've found I really missed the sound of a good 15-inch driver. Possibly because that's what I heard and used as I was coming up. While I'm sure it's not for everyone, I'm really happy with my setup now.
