Going through a minimalist stage

My minimalism mode is applying strictly to my live playing.

My acoustic bass setup uses just a Fishman Pro-EQ Platinum. That is one nifty little box. It works for folk and bluegrass music, and many church songs. It can be phantom-powered, which makes setting it up a breeze. The EQ on it is mainly to remove the piezo quack from my U-Bass.

And when I take my Gretsch to a church gig, I've been content with just overdrive.

At home is a different story. Completely at home for my own pleasure, I want to put together a setup for post-ambient-dubstep. I just need a synthy fuzz, filter and a delay/looper. :D

Honestly Freight Train, those of us that frequent the Effects sub-forum are well aware of the arguements you (and many others) present. For us, the benefits outweigh whatever percieved cost there is. We want to talk about effects because we like (love) them. This thread isn't about no effects. Caeman (the OP) said for his needs he is cutting back on effects, OD is enough for him. Caeman never said effects are bad, they were killing his tone. Caeman also said he isn't done with effects either.
SO, while there may be some science to back up what you say, I have never had anything but complements about my tone when I am playing out. I will admit when my band recorded in a studio, I didn't use as many effects as I do live.

I LOVE EFFECTS.

I am merely lacking a proper public venue for anything beyond an overdrive pedal. Thus, my feelings of minimalism.

^ THAT should have been added to the op post lol.

I totally get you caeman, I don't see myself using many effects at all in a live situation. Its just not the type of music that calls for it.

I love bands that do have plenty of effects though and someday Id like to play those songs but obviously for a different crowd.

For now, I'll be sticking with my pt mini and dirt :)

I don't understand why people get so bent out of shape about this stuff. Why does it matter to you if someone wants to use effects or not? This is the effects forum Caeman still uses effects and likes them. I get that some people don't. I don't get the whole "I've been doing this for 40 years with just an amp and a cable." Good for you. Not everybody plays classic rock and blues. A lot of the guys that frequent the effects forum wouldn't be able to make the music they do without effects. Too bad if they don't do it your way or "the industry standard". Get bent. I play with just me and a drummer. That would be incredibly boring without my pedals. If you don't like effects at all what are you even doing reading the effects forum let alone posting in it. I just don't get the whole everyone should just get a p-bass and an ampeg and do it like I do or they are wrong attitude. It's music. It's self expression. It's not all supposed to be the same. You guys probably only eat saltines and dry toast. Rant over.

The "no FX" mindset is from the same "Jaco is boring" crowd, or I bet there is a lot of overlap. Adventureless bass playing. I'm sure it makes the guitar players they work with (note: NOT play with) very happy. I say, "F*(k a guitarist who uses effects but doesn't like it when I do." I'm through with that BS.

*foams at the mouth*

*pees on self a little*

RAARRFFAGAGGGHHHGHHH-hey. smells like shallow end over here.

naw. i got what Caemenger was saying. and i feel him. ohhhhh HOW DO I FEEL HIM. not every gig needs a butt load of effects. i'm with Ze Gamboliner though. i never understand little moobs that get all tarted up and happy to brag about 1 Cord, 1 Fender, 0 Fun.

's like being freaked out by furries or doods making out or chocolate sauce elbow dipping munging fetishes that you're not into.

hah! hell, just substitute the phrase "i've only put one cord from my bass to my amp EVER" with "i've only been with ONE GIRL in ONE POSITION (missionary probably?) EVER" and see how boring and weird it sounds.

y'all are ADORABLE.
