sounds like a lame idea - I'm all for gimmicks, but that's just not, well, it's just plain dumb. AND it's been done before so your not even a misunderstood genius. . .

you want to shock - do something no ones ever seen before and be creative about it. remember though, if you get a name for it, you'll have to do it all the time. methinks the self mutilation thing will get really old, really quick!

the idea of doing all the things you mention reaks of poser. it's all been done. it's cliche. it's screaming for attention. it's very hard to pull off, especially when you're doing because you think it would be cool. some people will get a kick out of it, most will think "what an diot." gg allen was an idiot. and now he's dead. and I dont' think he enjoyed any of his life.

I think bottom line, you can do all kinds of stuff... as long as it's honest. If it's not, they're going to smell it from a mile away, and you will wish you were never born. People are ruthless when it comes to performers being disingenuous. Guys like Iggy, Dave Lee Roth, Robert Smith and Maynard got away with acting like freaks, because they really are freaks. They're not faking it. Then you have guys who WERE brilliant at being freaks, but didn't know when to quit... David Bowie comes to mind. Brilliant guy, but he couldn't fade away with grace... Just had to do one more tour, trying to look like a gay ripoff of Trent Reznor... and basically erased 2/3 of the respect he had built up. Sad.

Just know that if your band gets bigger, you're gonna have to step up your game. Going for fake blood is the better option, because the more shows you play, the scars aren't gonna go away, and you're eventually gonna look pretty effed up. So keep that in mind :D

Right on, bro! However, I took some major heat over pointing out the dumbness of the wooden frets idea. People with dumb ideas don't relish being told their idea is dumb. I'm just saying. Prepare for a ramming.

pull a Marilyn Manson in his hayday and f**kin go for it! If you want to up your intensity for sure if thats what you want to do do it. Your fans will be like holy sh*t did you see the bass player broke a glass bottle over his head and kept playing! I'm sure that will get you more popular too with the right crowd.

i've shared the stage with bands that pulled stuff like this, and believe me it was pretty universally considered to be at best lame/poser and at worst worth a beat down. let me explain.

folks pulling a GG on stage mess up the stage for the folks coming after them and make -their- life difficult, as well as making extra work for the venue itself. it is _not_ "rock and roll" to wreck a venue, or make extra work for the folks running the joint, it's a good way to get a rep as "unemployable" among club owners, regardless of draw. i've seen bands get the plugs pulled on the spot and an all expense paid trip off the stage courtesy of the venue's security. i've also seen gg wannabes (as well as gg himself, a long time ago) get brutalized by guys in other bands sharing the stage with them for getting their "threatrics" on the other band's gear.

if you are -dead set- on doing something, first and most importantly, contact the venue and clear your theatrics with them, and secondly, and almost as importantly, make it campy and gwar'ish, do -not- do something "serious" in an attempt to show how metal you are. that will backfire and you will look utterly absurd, as opposed to only the partially, playfully absurd that gwar and other similar acts look.

i can respect your desire to leave your audience with something memorable, but ultimately, it should be your music that does it, not some lame antics. anybody can smash a bottle on their head - folks playing guitar hero can do that while they "play". :eyebrow:

the irony of all this is I have F.A.K.E on my knuckles and "faux" in my sn but I hate being fake so i'd rather avoid the fake blood. I do like the idea of the lit cig in the head stock though. In a poorly lit bar that could look pretty interesting. The cutting probably will screw up my playing though/deaden my strings if the blood got that way (which it probably would). Don't want things to be to rehearsed but at the same time I really need to be aware of the do's and dont's.

As far as the band goes - old school punk band.

The fact that you are thinking about this now makes it allready rehearsed and probably fake according to your standards. I can totally see how you can get caught up in the moment and hurt yourself smashing into the drum kit or jumping of something but the way you talk about this makes it sound totally lame. You intend to do these things on a regular basis as part of your act? That is the un-punkiest thing you could do man. If you turned out to be the first to do it and it just happened one gig, that be legit, the fact you ask this makes it totally fake if you ask me.

Don't get me wrong, I am not at all against having a certain routine as long as it helps get the music across, so i'm not punk if you look at it like that. Apart from hurting yourself sounding just dumm (IMO), I don't see how you seriously plan this and still consider it 'punk'.

Very uncool and very very bad idea.

I'm thinking of getting self violent on stage to add to the intensity of the stage performance (burning myself with lit ciggettes, cutting, breaking glass bottles over my body, etc.) I'm just not sure the proper venues for this kind of stuffs. My playing is solid (enough) and I'm able to move around while keeping rythm but I want to give more then just the standard musical performances. I think of bans like kiss, black sabath, the sex pistols where they've all done similiar acts of violence on stage.
Get help. Really. Seriously. Get help.
