Oh! If you want just some great, simple food and a nice beer... Port of Call. Best burger I've ever eaten. Get the roast beef sandwich from Acme Oyster House. The Debris Fries from Katie's. Skip the Gumbo Shop and the Old Coffee Pot (if it's still open).
Just remember to pronounce Burgundy St as Bur-GUN-dy. & in the Faubourg-Marigny, where the Frenchman St strip is, it's fine to walk alone after dark as long as you're not stumbling and have your wits about you. The Spotted Cat is one of my favorite venues period, though DBA across the street books arguably higher profile acts.
Food: Katie's in Mid City, around the corner from Liuzza's. Go to both! Katie's served me a crawfish savory beignet last October and I'm still a little full. Breakfast-wise, you can't go wrong with the Ruby Slipper. Po boys, I like Johnny's in the Quarter and Cooter Brown's on the west side; the latter is also loaded with beer taps and gargantuan oysters. For oysters closer in, Acme is well-known but I'm a fan of Felix's up the street from there.
If you end up in the Irish Channel / Garden District area, I'm fond of Tracey's a number of things, po boys not least among them, and there's breakfast up and down Magazine St.

Can't go wrong with charbroiled oysters at Drago's at the Hilton Riverside looking out over the water.
This'll be no help, but sometime back before Katrina, I played a casino gig there with the Woody Herman band.
Afterward, some of the guys piled into a rental car and they took me to this place in the lower 9th ward for a po' boy.
All I remember was that you ordered and received your food from a lady in a locked building seated behind a thick sheet of bullet proof glass.

It has been a few years since I have been there, but I fell in love with the city. A few places we enjoyed for great food were The Commander's Palace, and a place called Houston's. One or both may be in the Garden District. Another favorite memory was enjoying Bananas Foster at Brennan's in the French Quarter. Say hello to the city for me, I was only there once, but love that city.
Commander's is good -- pricey but good. Much better than Antoine's both price-wise and food-wise in my opinion. I'm not really a fine dining guy and Antoine's was too formal for me. I'm also not really a "$100 plus tip for dinner for 2" kind of guy. Muriel's was equally as pricey.
Be sure your shots are up to date. They shampoo the street 2x a day for a reason.

One of the better experiences I had during my last visit was the New Orleans School of Cooking. You learn to make a meal and get to eat and drink a lot - you may learn a little too. I recommend the hands-on lesson if you can get one. Very nice experience. Also Johnny's for po-boys. Beyond that, it's hard to go wrong.

So Anyway, if it's your first time then do the Quarter & tourist joints. If you've already done that, then go to Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Eunice, and Opelousas. Great food, music, dance halls, and friendly people. The home of Zydeco!!
If you enjoy coffee try Cafe Du Monde. Excellent..and Legendary.
Lived in nola for 7 years only to leave for a masters program. Snug harbor is a great place for jazz if you're into that, bourbon street sucks IMO. Some ok cover bands on the street but I'm not into the filth and party scene. Great band at 10 on sunday nights at the spotted cat on frenchmen street, frenchmen in general is a good time.
