Good band did everything wrong

I'm sure they were incredible.

That doesn't change the fact that if you had gone to a local bar and watched a band of old guys on stage in shorts and white New Balance sneakers, sitting on stools, behind music stands you would have been bored out of your mind.

At this point, Levin and Fripp have fallen into a totally different category. They've been awesome for so long they can get away with doing "An intimate evening with" shows.

You n Bubbah and Stinky and Snake playing at the bar n grill can't. ;)

I went to see a band play tonight. ...The bass player, Tony, had a music stand in front of him. The guitarist, Robert, had a headstock tuner and just sat and played guitar all night with headphones on. And the worst of it was that nothing they played was exactly like the record.

Our guitarist and I both use music stands, the guitarist uses a headstock tuner, I play seated and nothing we play is played like it was originally recorded. Most times we don't have a drummer.

Did Robert spend most of the night sitting on his throne shining a flashlight on paying customers whom were taking photos during the show so security could escort them out?

I never waste time holding my phone up to the annoyance of all behind me and in the band.
But Sir F's fixation during a Chicago event a few years back really turned me off. That and 3 drum kits? The ( original ) sax dude was awesome, and as much as I admire Tony, I miss Bill Wheaton more. And Adrian Belew.

Been a fan of Crimson since their first album. Lately not so much. But I am glad you got to see an excellent show. They won't be touring much longer I would bet. Congrats.

That's a bunch of self fulfilling prophecy there. Do you think there's any possibility that Robert would have wanted to play in a bar band doing covers with Bubbah (maybe Snake though) or Not sit in a shadow? KC didn't seem to break any rules to Jimi Hendrix when he saw them. "Best band in the world" or something like that?

OK, so now that some of us get the joke, I'll also tell you about the opening act.

I got to see two great bass players tonight. I've been a fan of Tony Levin forever, so that one I knew about going in. The opener was Mike Keneally's Zappa band, with Scott Thunes on bass.

I want to tell you all, if you get the chance to see that man play, do it. He is a force of nature. I love a player who can play tastefully while also pulling everything possible out of an instrument. Scott was as aggressive a player as I've ever seen while somehow also doing everything right. Just absolutely loved watching him play.

I can find no video of Keneally's band. Is that the name they are touring under? Did they just play Zappa, or some originals too? I'll stop, but have many more questions...

I've saw them with the three drummer line-up with Bill Reiflin (RIP you brilliant dude) and again with the current line-up. I don't think they're coming to Seattle on this tour so I guess I'll miss this last one. I loved it both times, they're one of my absolute favorite bands. Best era for my tastes was the John Wetton era, but I love it all.

I went to see a band play tonight. Spent good money on front row seats.

They did everything wrong. They came out dressed up in tuxedo vests like a bunch of waiters. The bass player, Tony, had a music stand in front of him. The guitarist, Robert, had a headstock tuner and just sat and played guitar all night with headphones on. They had too many drummers. And the worst of it was that nothing they played was exactly like the record.

Might have also been the best show I ever saw in my life.

As a bonus, I got to see another great band but I didn't get any pictures of them. I might tell you about that in a later post.

(that's all sarcasm by the way-- though all true)

Looks can be deceiving….. Glad you had a good time.
