Good band did everything wrong

I went to see a band play tonight. Spent good money on front row seats.

They did everything wrong. They came out dressed up in tuxedo vests like a bunch of waiters. The bass player, Tony, had a music stand in front of him. The guitarist, Robert, had a headstock tuner and just sat and played guitar all night with headphones on. They had too many drummers. And the worst of it was that nothing they played was exactly like the record.

Might have also been the best show I ever saw in my life.

As a bonus, I got to see another great band but I didn't get any pictures of them. I might tell you about that in a later post.

Tony's been doing that since the Peter Gabriel days, it's kinda his "thing". Looks like he's gotten Robert into it too!

The venue doesn't allow photos, and Fripp has been notorious for not liking cameras during shows. But when they first came out they said they'd take pictures of us at the end, and that we could take pictures of them at the same time. So that's what we all did. Hilarious.

Just Tony and Mel between the two of them probably have a dozen instruments on stage... and that drum gear, yeah. But Robert's rig gets 1/4 of the stage, as it should and must!

OK, so now that some of us get the joke, I'll also tell you about the opening act.

I got to see two great bass players tonight. I've been a fan of Tony Levin forever, so that one I knew about going in. The opener was Mike Keneally's Zappa band, with Scott Thunes on bass.

I want to tell you all, if you get the chance to see that man play, do it. He is a force of nature. I love a player who can play tastefully while also pulling everything possible out of an instrument. Scott was as aggressive a player as I've ever seen while somehow also doing everything right. Just absolutely loved watching him play.

Because they're one of the best bands on the planet. But by TalkBass standards, they did a lot of things "wrong." Except there was nothing really wrong. That's the joke.

I knew some people wouldn't get the joke so I added that little thing at the end about it being sarcasm. It just struck me as funny while I was watching them how many TB faux pas I was seeing on that stage.

...what if Tony, bored of watching Netflix opted for browsing bass forums, noted all the things that stir up emotions, then called Robert to say 'hey, I've got these ideas to incorporate into our stage show...'... ;-D

Gatekeeping is hella strong on TB. People enjoy making up rules and "must haves" for... reasons? I guess. But, it's called TALKbass for a reason

I'm totally envious about the show you got to experience! Bet you had an incredible time, even if you had to sit through all that riff-raff.
