Good Bass Head Needed!

I bought an Avatar B210 (4 ohms) on a whim (and good reviews from TBers) and need a decent head, probably used as my budget of prox $300-325 is limited. I use a 120W 15" combo now with PA support which is really fine for my needs (all my gigs have PA support--theirs or ours) so I don't need huge power. I was thinking maybe a used Hartke 3500, a newer HA2500 or a used GK. Any suggestions? I play mostly classic rock; using ATK700, Tribute L200, and assorted passive Fenders. Thanks!

With that budget I'd definitely find some good used deals. You would be surprised how many good items you could find used. You definitely could find an old Traynor tube head for less then your budget and it would be great the genre of music you play. IFFFFFFFF you do decide to buy new as the above poster stated an Ashdown MAG 300 would be primo.

I've considered the Mag 300H (and the GK 600) and it certainly looks attractive; I'm a little concerned about service, as they have no local dealers around here. Also, after looking through past threads and various online reviews, there seems some doubt as to its reliability. Maybe I'm mistaken, as reviews can be very subjective.

After seeing the title, I was about to direct you to your local Craigslist but as far a bass heads in your price range I'd say a used GK 800RB would hook you up outstandingly. There's also a Carvin B800 in the TalkBass classifieds here for low dough. You should leap on that if it's still available.

Yeah, that's a good point, you might be able to find a really good deal on a used head. A few months ago when I was visiting a local store they had a 300-watt slightly used Peavey head for $150. I'm sure you could find similar deals if you shop around.

Check out Peavey FireBass700 Heads used should be in your price range and have plenty of power If memory serves me correctly 475 Watts @4 Ohms. Built like a tank and very good tones available. Just be careful with the contour knob. Boosts the lows and cuts the mids Good for playing at low volume but not for loud.

Ashdown MAG300 new or the Carvin B800. Used you could find a lot of good amps for that price. I'd suggest some GK800s or 700s, Ampeg SVT3s, Nemesis NA series.

I'm looking for either a used GK or Peavey. Both have good sound and reliability reputations and both are popular enough that there are several used ones floating around so I can pick the one I want.

forget the mag300. I had two. both sounded like garbage and then the 2nd went up in smoke!!!!

Thanks; the Mag stuff worries me. I'm wondering if a new Hartke HA2500 would work. It has 250 watts into 4 ohms, which would seem to be enough for a 2x10 cab.

If you can find a Carvin B800 (they're being discontinued but were getting blown out for $349), that IMO would be a substantially better choice.

And BTW, the idea of being "enough" for a cab doesn't really apply. What you have to think about is whether it's enough for the volume you want/need to get.

I've owned and used a ton of GK heads and they've always been great. I'd look for a used 800RB.

I'm going to be the oddball here and suggest a Peavey Mark III, if you can get hold of a good one.

Seriously - that thing is a brick, a powerhouse, and coupled with a fender and a classic rock band its just like the missing link.

I like some of the newer higher-powered Peavey heads too, and those Tour series look pretty sweet.

I love my GK 400RB-IV got it on ebay for 325. I'm sure you can find one on there for that price if you shop a little. It was a buy it now too so i didn't have to bid or anything. Also you might want to check out RMCaudio not sure what they sell the 400RB for but they seem to be the best deal on new GKs
