Good basses $250 or under PLEASE HELP

I want to get a new bass for my birthday, and I have a limit of around 250. Anybody know any good basses that I could buy?

I haven't really been able to find info on active or passive either, because I'm entirely self taught. I have no clue the difference.

I have a squire modified jaguar bass I got for $300, it's a bit above your limit but it's a pretty good bass for the price. I also just bought a stagg precision bass from a friend, it's a decent bass and less than $200

I'd look for a used Squier Classic Vibe. That's the most quality you'll get for what you have. Maybe look at Craigslist first. Sometimes you might find a desperate person in need of quick money.

Go passive. Good active setups are very expensive.

Honestly I just bought mine off from Guitar Center, they have a huge amount of used instruments on their website and then can have it shipped to store for you. 30 day money back guarantee. Now you have to pay for shipping which is a bummer, but my 8.5 lb bass weighed 14.7 with the amount of padding they used, never say an instrument shipped with such care!

my recommendation is a used squier classic vibe precision bass.

SBMM S.U.B. Ray4 (listed at $279; one used for $220). A discount version of a MM Stingray. Seems to get good reviews on here; active electronics, 38mm nut (described as "narrow"), satin neck finish. The mint green looks sharp.

Squier P/J (listed at $179). Actually been hype about this on TB; passive, Jazz style neck, P/J setup. Looks like a solid bass.

I'd choose either the Classic Vibe 60's Precision..or the 60's Jazz. The 50's Precision comes with very small frets that wear down fast. The 50's P does have one big positive. You could go without the pickguard. It's the only one of the three that doesn't have visable routing.

Actually..you could play a professional gig with any of them.

and another thing about the 50's. Some of them are clearcoated over a pine body(the other Classic Vibes are basswood). I haven't tried one of those out at this point. They could become collectible.

Since when did Squier become a decent brand? Last time I really was looking at new instruments, they certainly had issues...

Good to hear their production value increased! Go for something that sounds good, and feels right. I have stubby fingers myself and I prefer a thinner neck.
