Good Bassists in Not So Great Bands

Yeah, First Post and Thread!

The reason I decided to post this topic was that I was listening to some pop punk this afternoon, and I liked the bassist for the band I was listening to's playing, but the band itself (Sum 41) is a band that is typically flamed, so I decided to start this thread
Who do you think is a good bassist in a band that is constantly flamed?

Jepha Howard (The Used)
Hunter Burgan (AFI)
Paul Gray (Slipknot)

I'm not so sure about these next two but,
Brian Yale (Matchbox Twenty)
Mark Stoermer (The Killers)


Now I don't want this becoming a Flame topic, or worst of all a joke topic, so please give me an honest answer, and hey if you think my picks suck, go ahead and flame me

P.S: This is in no way saying these bands suck (I love all the bands I listed), I'm just expressing that these are IMO good bassists that are in "FLAMED" bands.

A good bass player will make any band better. But, once I got to thinking about this question, the answer in my head was obvious.

I have to answer...my beloved...

Level 42.

I do not think I ever would have gained an interest in the band had it not been for Mark King. Except, once I did get into the band, I discovered the groove majic that is Philip Gould. There's a guy who really understands the way a drummer should play in a funk band.

stone sour gets under rated, but to me I love listening to the first album just to hear that bass pumping, adding bits in when it should be and its just perfect...

WJGreer, I agree with you that a good bassist makes a band better, but again I just want to note that it's not that these bands suck, it's that in most of the internet community these bands are constantly flamed (I really should change the title should I)

In general, I find that a lot of really crummy pop punk, and especially political pop punk for whatever reason, has fairly good bass playing, despite the fact that on the whole it might be nearly unlistenable.
