Good head for ampeg 410hlf

I just bought the PF800 head to go with my 410HLF...sounds great. Nice and warm...classic Ampeg tone and enough power to do larger gigs too. For the money its one of the best heads out there in my opinion. Light too. Weighs about 12 pounds I think. I paid $559.99 for it new. Good deal if you ask me.

Thank you for the wrong opinion, George...

:p

:hiding:

Thanks for your usual excuse making for Ampeg, Jimmy - you're consistant, if nothing else...

I've used heads from Genz Benz, Gallien Kreuger, Peavey, Ashdown, and a few others, and my SVT-3PRO was as loud as any 500 watt head from another maker.

That hasn't been my experience - and others have noted the same thing...

Right now, I'm sold on the 3 pro! I don't mind the heaviness for now. If y'all know of anyone selling either of these: Ampeg 410 hlf or ampeg svt 3 pro. Tell them I'm interested and to message me. Thanks guys for all the suggestions/help.

The 3 Pro is not bad weight - wise. I think it is about 25 pounds.

Personally, I find the graphic eq very useful - but for people who prefer the more standard controls, you can just leave the eq off.

As far as the power/volume - the amp performs noticeably better at 4 ohms then 8 (so you should be good with the 410HLF) Also, there are many ways to tap into the volume potential with the 3 Pro: Gain, Master Volume, EQ level etc - just don't let the little red signal lamp keep you from turning it up;).

Ok I like the 3 pro ... but now I'm thinking about the pf-800...

Does it sound good at low volumes as well as high volumes?

How does the MOSFET preamp compair to the tubes in the 3-pro?

From the few things I have read, they HAVE resolved the cut out issue that was in some of the pf-500 units?

Will the 410hlf be a good match up with the pf-800?

Thanks guys

I've owned everything ampeg from a 3pro to the svt classic, and IMO you should look into the orange terror bass 500. I have the terror bass 1000, but with a 410 the 500 would be great for you, and close to your price range. The orange is a great hybrid head with tons of headroom, and has a very simple eq. A simpler eq is much better than having to dial in an ampeg head with its band eq plus all your standard controls. It leaves a lot less room for error, but is still versatile. Plus the orange looks awesome and only weighs ten pounds.

I was definitely thinking about the terror bass 500 at one point but ... I think I'm more of an Ampeg type of guy. I'd buy one if I could find one for like $300 or super cheap haha.

Yes.

It's a little different. I think the 3 Pro is a tighter sounding amp, but the PF800 is cool too, because it reminds me of a tube amp being cranked just a little too hard and just starting to get a little sag to it.

So far I've heard no negative reports. Played one too and it was a champ.

Yep. Headroom is always appreciated in micros as far as I'm concerned. Just don't turn it up to the point where the cab sounds like it'll explode.

Yeah the early v4/v4b (never tried the v4h) has plenty of power for the hlf... The 100watts of tube tone is very loud through the hlf..

Back on topic.. Out of the 3, 7 or pf800 think I would go with the 7.. I like having at least a tube preamp... However I do love my micro vr.....

I would stick with the 3-Pro if only because the 800W RMS of the pf800 could potentially blow out the speakers in the 410hlf. You'd have to have it pretty loud, but still. I run a 3-Pro/410hlf rig, and they seem like they're made for each other. Plenty of volume--never gone past noon on the master. Gained up, you can get a very nice growl out of it. Plus, the tightness of the 3-Pro offsets some of the looseness of the ported cab. I think my wife paid around $500 for mine (best Christmas present ever!), maybe a little more. If you do choose the 3-Pro, I'd budget another $75 or so for new tubes, especially if its loaded with cheap Sovteks. Speaking from personal experience, its a night and day difference.

Thank you! I will be ordering my hlf and 3-pro on thursday! :)

What tubes do you suggest? I work at a music store and we have groove tubes and mesa boogie tubes. Obviously i could buy online though.

Will someone explain peak watts and ___Watt RMS?

I assume I'm in the minority here, but I didn't have a problem with the stock/factory tubes in my SVT-3Pro.
I know some people swear by replacing the "cheap" Sovteks right off the bat but I didn't see a reason why. And to be honest, when I put new tubes in, I used four Sovteks and one JJ.

That's just my opinion, and like I said - I'm might be the only one who liked the sound of the amp "as is". Then again, I've never tried it with any other brand.

I use mine (mainly) with an SVT-410HE and it's a beast. Love the punch and there's always been lots of bottom. As far as power/volume goes, that's never been an issue. Don't be afraid to give it some juice, it's a great amp.

I have a Mullard RI 12ax7 in the cathode follower spot; unfortunately, I can't remember where that is on the board off the top of my head, and the board is not labeled :-(. I've got Tung-Sol RIs for all the other 12ax7s and the 12au7. They were recommended by TubeDepot.

I'm not too versed on the technical specs, but RMS is sort of like an average wattage at some percentage THD (I think it's 5% or something), and peak is, well, the peak instantaneous wattage that you'll get from really slamming a note.

I played for years with my Markbass LMII into my 410HLF and it sounded great. They or the III can be had used for less than your max price. I have since bought an SVT and that really makes the HLF sing, but the MB sounds great too (I kept the MB to use with my 210AV as my "small" rig)

Had to stop to walk the dogs. More on wattage.

There's no standard as to which rating (peak or RMS) may be used for speaker specs, so claimed wattage can vary from mfr. to mfr. Depends on what looks best in advertisements I guess. Also, with solid-state, power output increases when the speaker load decreases, so that's something to really watch going forward. With tubes this isn't an issue, as they need a transformer to bring their output impedance down to speaker level. The transformer will have separate taps for each speaker load, so full power is delivered regardless :-). FWIW, my hlf is rated for 500W RMS/1000W peak @4 ohms; 3-Pro 450W RMS @4 ohms, 3% THD.
