Hi, I have a 2005 Japanese Fender Jaguar bass. It's a good bass but it's missing that great tone I know Jaguars are capable of. It sounds, generally, too tinny and modern for my tastes. I was thinking of upgrading to Fender '62 reissue pickups, but I wanted to know your opinions. I really want great pickups that will bring out the true potential of this bass, while adding a darker, fuller sound. Thanks!

Good pickups to upgrade Jaguar bass?

I think you mean Fender CS 60s, the 62s are P bass pups. BTW I put some CS 60s in my Jag the minute I got it home, great pickups. I don't know why Fender put those crappy ceramic pups in the Jags and Geddy's? It can't cost much at all for them to at least put a decent pup in there! 😡

I'd throw some fralin's in it. As well as stacked pots. But that's me.
I use hand wound pickups from a guy I know. Omni Guitar Works, if you have Facebook look him up. Tell him what you want, he only uses alnico magnets(IV or V). V is brighter, his pickups are hotter and nice.

I actually like the Jaguar stock pickups pretty well. But I was ultimately looking for something with more beef in the low mid and lows.
The Custom shop 60's sounded alright, but were way too low output for me. I didn't really find them to be very usable in a passive setup. They would probably be nice with an active pre-amp.
I like Dimarzio Ultra Jazz in a different bass, but did not like them at all in my Jaguar.
I ended up modding mine with Lollar Thunderbird pickups >_> and am completely happy. very expensive, but the gamble was totally worth it.
Otherwise I'd have next tried some of the overwound jazz pickup options out there.

Im quite a fan of the CS60s. If you want a listen, here is a sample from my two jazz basses (one at a time, first fingers, then pick). Both are passive.
Probably wouldnt sound a tad different in a jag due to the 70s spacing but might give you a good idea of what they'd be like. I find them warm and dark with a very strong low mid.

My Jaguar neck pickup was fine but both together (in parallel) had a ton of treble that had to be tamed with the tone knob on 6 or 7. I was going to install a Quarter Pounder at the bridge, but I raised the neck pickup closer so it is louder than the bridge pickup. Now it is purring like a cat! Since I got a Jaguar I rarely play my Jazz Bass. -It seems too tame.
This is a great example of a minor adjustment making a big improvement. Great Job
Pickup height can do so much for tone including removing "Mud" from your sound. I absolutely love the Complete Jaguar Electronics package.
