Good Quality Bass distortion Pedal

I want to buy a distortion pedal for my bass. I want to buy a good one, but not a super high tech full pedal board. I will spend $60-$200 for a pedal. I want to achieve the sound of the bass in starlight by muse. Any help with a name and maker? Thanks.

and you don't want the boogie woogie. it sounds like nothing, plus schmaoga effects are way out of the price range you gave yourself. the company has been going downhill and underwater ever since they moved their factory to atlantis.

IME, the BOss OD pedal will only get you just that---OD. Not spectacular OD, just OD--not distortion. Try a $50 Digitech Grunge out at GC or somewhere. Hi-lite your hi mids and a tad of treble with a decrease on the bass knob. NOTE: It can get pretty nice for me--i say again: for me. Hope it works for you. The Way Huge pedals I've tried don't get any clarity in the distortion for me, nor does Rocketron, Ibanez and others. So sticking with the Grunge for now.

That said, my current favorite is the EHX Bass Muff. If I'm remembering correctly, Muse used a Big Muff on the sweet tune "Hysteria."

I'm really diggin' my Bad Monkey. Mild OD, not too crazy w/the gain. Quite tube-esque, IMO. I had a Danelctro Daddy-O that I liked(more gain available where the BM has more powerful EQ)but the plastic jacks went south on me. The BEST for me was a Guyatone Flip Series Tube Bass Driver. Discontinued & fairly rare.

Electronix Gemini Drive. If you're just going to have one dirt pedal, this is the one I'd recommend. You can do low gain OD, high gain distortion, and even some fuzz approximations. It's very flexible.

Do not get a multi-effects unit just for distortion. You will regret it.

For Starlight, if you want to stay cheap, get an Ibanez PD7. It has less noise than the Boss, and to me comes closer to that tone.

For a little more money, the next pedal I would think of is the MXR Blowtorch or the Wounded Paw Attack Goat. Both are within the $140-$150 range new, and you can probably find them in the classifieds for less if you're patient.

The important thing for a song like that (and many MUSE songs) is to have a clean blend available with any pedal you might pick, at least enough to retain the natural bottom of your bass.

This.^IME multis totally cut corners on OD/distortion(& pretty much everything else). The cheapest single unit will be far better in the short & long run.

Not sure if it will help, but I just bought a DHA VT1-MK3 Valve Overdrive here on TB and I absolutely love it. It does a great light overdrive (which is what I want) and can get fuzzy if that is your thing. It has a tube in it and IMHO, was exactly what I was looking for in a distortion/overdrive pedal. Check them out.

Just gotta +1 the DON'T GET A MULTI suggestion. Not the way to go. But, dirt in general is the easiest to find, hardest to nail down effect of 'em all. There's millions, and they all sound different. Try a Fulltone OCD, that one's pretty sweet.

I can get the album and HAARP tone with my Russian Muff. There were a couple on the Classifieds last I checked and they're around the 35-50 bucks mark. (Plus if you like Muse it's probably not a bad idea to pick up a fuzz pedal).
