Good recording software

Well, this is what I was told at Guitar Center by the guy working the counter, so take this with a grain of salt.
He told me that in Cubase LE, you only get 20 exports. That means you can make as many projects as you want, but then you only get 20 shots to export them to a .wav or mp3.
In SE (the version I have, roughly $85-90), it looks like you only get limited on the exports of .mp3 files. I've been cranking out .wavs no problem, though, and just converting them with another program. When I go to export as an .mp3, a counter pops up in the window that says "20 mp3 exports remaining." I also own Adobe Audition, though, and just open up the .wavs in there and do a Save As... and make them .mp3s. I think there are free programs you can download to do that yourself.
I bet an e-mail to Steinberg would clear that up.

Okay, it looks like Guitar Center Guy was only half right. I checked the Operation Manual section on exports (I hadn't made it to page 449 yet
) and it seems it has the same export functionality as SE. Under mp3s, it says that it has 20 available mp3 exports, but doesn't have anything like that under .WAVs, or .AIFFs. I have other software that does that, so if that's it I'm going to give it a try. I don't see me doing anything with MIDI anytime soon, so this should give me an overview of GUI computer based recording.Off to make Bongo noises.

You might try CUBASE SE, for $99 you get unlimited MIDI, 48-tracks of audio and will support up to 16 VST's at a time (of course all depending on your PC's memory, processor speed and disk space) I just did my most recent CD on it and it worked great for me. What's your opinion of Pro Tracks Plus, 2.2 I think, not SE. It's a version I got with the Lexicon Omega interface.
I like the pre-amps and inputs of the interface, but not sure about Pro Tracks. Will other software work with this interface. I'm more interested in something that is simple and geared more for audio as opposed to midi if something like that exist.

I own Cubase SL and Acid Pro 5. However, Acid Pro 5 is my favorite.
Most software developers have demos of their products, I would check out a few of the ones mentioned in this and other treads. Considering software is usually non-returnable, it is best to gain an idea of whether or not the product will be enjoyable to use during the recording process.

Bassmonkee- Cubase LE also lacks the drum editor included in the other versions. If you ever do try MIDI, you can't manually change your drum parts.

I use audacity for EVERYTHING. Gotta love how nice noise removal can make your stuff sound. Only thing I dont like is EQUing-I want sliders instead of a line.
Another vote for Sonar. I use version 5 PE which might be overkill for you, but Home Studio is a very nice program, hell you can even get it at Circuit City for $99.
You can get 8 track free with protools. Try it out and see what you think. We did our whole album with protools. I love it. Go here and check it out http://www.digidesign.com/ptfree/
