Good replacement for EVM 15L in TL606 cabinet?

Whenever changing drivers, it's always a good idea to check the excursion limits and response curve because some (many) modern are quite different in order to take advantages of the large power amps available. What this means is that sometimes, the excursion limited power handling may be (much) lower than the rating, and response may be wildly askew.

As @Matt Dean States above. The Eminence 3015 is a great replacement in a TL606 cab. I've got 2 & they sound huge. Handle a TON of power and are L O U D !! I rarely need both. ..Where before I put the 3015s in, I'd often need two 115 cabs but these "new" neo drivers are phenomenal!
I'd almost go as far as saying ONE of the 3015 loaded cabs is close to as loud as two of the originals. Almost and close. .....:woot:

Hey everyone. I own a Mesa road-ready 2x15 from the 1980s with the original Electro Voice EVM 15L speakers in the enclosure. The last time I had a gig, it appears that the top speaker got blown out at some point as it produces no sound and even after trying to wire a test connection directly to the speaker, I get nothing, so looks like the speaker is dead and I'll need to replace it.

I just have to say (you don't put forward you exact testing procedure). Depending on the amp, plugging a good amp into a potentially not good speaker is not a good idea. Depending on how the speaker has died there is the chance of damaging the amp.

Usually I test with a junk (but functional) solid state power amplifier I have reserved strictly for test purposes.

If you like the sound of the EVs, why buy a new speaker when you can get the one you have reconed? Getting it reconed is a lot cheaper than buying a new one and in essence, its the same as buying new.
Was asking mostly because I am potentially looking for a newer, more modern speaker that works well in this enclosure.

Thanks a ton to everyone who reached out with opinions. I'm interested in the Kappalite 3015 for sure, but kind of on a tight budget (not looking to spend much more than $100ish; I only use this cab for live use / stage volume and have 70s squareback SVT 8x10 I have for studio usage), but will keep my eyes peeled in the classifieds.

I would probably swap out the working 15L (bottom speaker) to the top position to push more midrange and throw whatever replacement I end up with in the bottom since modern speakers will be voiced for more low end. Still looking for any opinions on the Eminence Delta 15A if anyone has used them! I've read that the Xmax of the Delta Pro 15A is significantly deeper than the normal "Delta 15A", so I'd probably look into one of those because it's within my budget.

Proper reconing of the 15L will be less expensive than half-assing with a random replacement. It will work better too. Win-win!

But what's the replacement value? If your test amp gets fried, do you have another that you can afford to waste?
It's a broken QSC power amp from the early 90's which has one dead channel. One's trash is another person's test amplifier. I don't really know why you're giving me a hard time about this.

I looked at some pre-assembled recone kits from Sound Speaker Repair's website and looks pretty promising. I think I'm gonna give it a try.

Not trying to give you a hard time, just saying that other testing methods are better to use first.

I would love a qsc amp with a dead channel, lots of uses. I was thinking you had an old practice amp or cassette player or something.

One's trash is another person's test amplifier is another persons perfectly good bass rig.

I am not familiar with the cabinet in question... Are the drivers put in separate cavities or do they share the same space? You might get a good (or at least functional) result from this type of "upgrade" if there are separate enclosures for the speakers. However, if there is a common enclosure for both speakers, this will be a bad idea, that will not really let you benefit in any way. On the contrary, the system will be limited of the weakest denominator in every respect; excursion, power handling, group delay etc. While that is also true for different spekaers in separate enclosure, matters get even worse if they share the same cavity!

The TL 606 is a single cabinet design by EV for the EV15L mainly....many companies did this design and used the EV15L.....some apparently had the EV15B but the parameters of those cabinets are different apparently.

No, I have 2 that are failed re-cones. They appear to be ok when tested but make funky noises when pushed. So, no.
Depends on the quality of the recone job and the parts used. There are excellent recones, there are abysmal recones and everything in between.

just note that mechanically, at low frequencies, these drivers are food for not much more that 200-250 watts RMS (each), so if you are using a larger amp you may be exceeding their limits.

I have reconed maybe a hundred of these drivers, primarily with factory parts, and the reliability was exactly the same as the original factory drivers. I stand behind my comments as factually accurate.
