Good sounding DI

I have a countryman DI that I have typically been running from the Direct out on my walterwoods to the board.
Sound guys always like it, but when I use that to record at a live show (situations where mixing the cab won't work) I have been very unhappy with the resulting bass sound. Very harsh and dry and direct sounding. Is there some DI that would warm up the bass sound in this situation?
I've heard good things about Groove Tools Brick.

Radial JDI or even a KT DN100. I'm not a big fan of the countryman for the same reasons you list. Or you could always go with a REDDI, but that is quite the investment! No experience with the brick, but I hear good things...

You misread him I believe. He uses the Tone Hammer for his dirty signal, but he doesn't use the DI. He uses the quarter inch out into an Avalan U5 I believe. I might be mistaken on the DI he uses, but it's not the integrated DI. He mentions this as his setup for recording though.

That's always been my take on the Type 85 as well, despite its position as a standard in the biz.

JDI or J48 sound way better to me. Radial has very interesting white papers on their site comparing them to the K/T, BSS and C-man.

The Brick sounds great if you can find one.

If your like the J48 you might give the DBX active DI a shot. I have A/B'ed them at the club I used to mix at and preferred the DBX by just a bit. I haven't tried either for recording though.

The Brick is awesome (I have one...), but it's big and bulky. If you're toting it around to live shows, it's gets cumbersome.

Instead, I use an Aguilar DB 900 or a Radial JDI for live work. I used to own an Avalon U5, but it, too, was big and bulky. The DB900 and JDI fit into my bag together just fine. I'd love to have a J48 around, as well, but it would be a bit overkill I suppose.

For the studio, I have used the JDI, DB900, Brick, and U5, as well as the DI output on my SWR Bass 350, among other things. I love the xfmr-based stuff, though (as you might notice).

I had the brick .. it was ok..nice tone i thought.. as was the UA solo610... the UA was nicer IMO.. but sold them both after buying the REDDI..
The agg 900 is not my favorite DI. i thought it was thin for some reason.. if you want a smaller tube DI of that size the Demeter Tube is smoother and less clanky on top...

I work with a grammy engineer at times and he loves the REDDI over ALL other DIs that i have brought.. tells me not to come without it.. He should buy his own at this point.. I think he has though.
