Good strings for low tuning?

I can tune D'addario .050 gauge strings to C standard without them being overly floppy. It requires a truss rod adjustment, but any string change does.

I take it you've never ventured to the Basses or Amps or any other forum on this said forum, eh?
Or read a post before today? Does this go for endorsing artists as well? Because it darn well should. I can think of plenty of shameless product honks off hand. Or do we just pick and choose like normal?

Yes, you're right. I've never read a post before today nor visited a forum I moderate. Did you somehow confuse yourself with someone who knows the rules well around here?

So... it's ok for greenboy, bill, plenty of others to shill their stuff all over the forum, even into non-related product threads, but Skip can't discuss his stuff here or recommend string gauges when specifically asked?

Commercial users can answer almost any specific question asked of them, except for pricing. They cannot recommend their products when not being specifically asked. You obviously aren't aware of the specifics of the rules- best not to comment on things you don't understand.

No, I do get it because I've been here a good long while. Back, ya know, when you could just talk and hang out.

Have you visited the basstringsonline.com thread yet and gone all Adolph on that one yet? Because I've seen that guy numerous occasions in other threads in Bass, Amps, FX, etc. forums way more hyping his own stuff than Skip ever does. Or do I need to report it to you and tattle like this is TGP or something lol.

So, again, maybe you just miss a lot and are trying to play catch up but don't try to put this over like you guys are "fair" across the board for the folks that have been here a long time. And in my case, longer than you!

I don't moderate this forum- I happened across this thread. If you find posts that are clear violations, report them. If you find posts that are violations but it doesn't bother you, then ignore them. There are a handful of mods and several thousand new posts every day- we're not going to get them all, or even close. But don't be that guy who speeds but then complains when a cop pulls him over that he didn't pull over every car that was speeding.

And that'll be the last on the topic. Discussing moderation in the open forums is a rule 5 offense, and I don't think you want to go there.

My next problem is going to be getting the string to fit through the bridge, anyone else put strings this size through the bridge on an LTD?

The JM500 has the option of top-loading yeah? Shouldn't be a problem as the strings are taperwound, the first 1.625inch from the ball-end is at a smaller gauge

Yeah they would ... some people tune their double-basses CGDA. I've been tuning my basses in fifths for 15 years. How about a bass tuned an octave below a cello? Is that not tempting? GCGCF is close to GCGDA and all-fifths FCGDA has more range than a 6 string. My 6 string was tuned in fifths for a few years and had the range of an 8 string, just under 5 octaves. I think knuckle_head has recently developed a big range of equal tension fifths sets, they're not yet shown on the site but he sells singles so i guess he can put a set together for you. That .254 set he joked about can do 2 octaves down

You'll probably need to widen the lowest nut slot a little, plenty of advice on how if you search. Just be careful not to deepen the slot or change the shape of the slot floor, it should retain it's curved valley shape.

Yeah, it's a top load. Hopefully the nut slot doesn't give me too much grief.

I'm not a fan of fifths tunings, but I'm itching for a sub-contra 6-string to utilize one of those .254's. If I could afford one of Skip's basses, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

What you are doing, though you seem to think you are right, and I'm sure a pefectly literal reading of the rules will vindicate you, is going to run people off in massive droves.

He's taking his ball and going home because he doesn't want to follow the rules the he knows perfectly well about. These rules have been around here for years, and the site is one of the nicest you've seen on the internet because of them. Prior to them, most of the commercial users were pawning their wares in half of the threads on the forums. He's perfectly capable of posting helpful information without suggesting people buy his stuff or posting links to brochures with sales pitches.

There are things I know and understand that a number of folks are exploring.

Sometimes they can be gotten to with brands and methods that exist - I do suggest those. Sometimes what I do is as good or better than conventional methods. And sometimes I am the only game in town.

Rules are spelled out and I will not not recommend my stuff when it's the right tool for the job. It is an impossible line for me to walk and I would rather not have to worry about what I have to say.

My choice - no anger or malice.
